One of Tata Motors’ showstopper cars for the 2018 Auto Expo was the 45X concept. The concept will turn into a production car by the end of 2019. Competition for the 45X will come from the Hyundai Elite i20 and the Maruti Baleno. A lot of showgoers at the Auto Expo were totally impressed with the 45X. Here are some of the audience reactions that Tata Motors managed to record from the Expo. You must remember that Tata would have edited these reactions to only reflect positive bits about the hot, new car.
The 45X will be built on the Advanced Modular Platform, a new scalable architecture that the automaker is betting big on. AMP will allow Tata Motors to build a range of cars affordably, due to extensive parts sharing. The 45X uses the Impact 2.0 design philosophy, and is one of the first budget cars from Tata to use the new design language.
While the overall design of the production car will look similar to the concept version shown at the Expo, the interiors could be quite different as the one shown at the Motor Show was very radical for a production model. Expect some features like the wing mirrors and panoramic sunroof to be replaced with more affordable parts.
The engines of the 45X is expected to be borrowed from the Tiago range. However, there will be variable geometry turbochargers on both the petrol and diesel engines to boost outputs. Tata Motors is likely to offer 5 speed manual gearboxes as standard on both petrol and diesel engines.
A twin clutch automatic gearbox is also under consideration as Tata feels that this option will keep the 45X sporty enough while ensuring good fuel efficiency. The car could also get a high-performance JTP version in future. For now, we await more details even as we wait for end-2019 – the time when this car will be launched in India.
