Turbocharged engines are becoming a new norm in the Indian automotive market. Some of the manufacturers are now offering a turbocharged engine option. Hyundai offers all of its vehicles with the option of a turbocharged petrol engine. Volkswagen offers the Polo and other of its vehicles with a turbo petrol engine. The same thing is also true for Mahindra. People were eagerly waiting for Tata Motors to launch the Altroz Turbo that was showcased at Geneva Motor Show 2019. Atroz is the first premium hatchback from the homegrown auto-manufacturer. The Turbo variant of the Altroz has been spied testing on our Indian roads quite a few times. Tata Altroz Turbo will be launching in January of 2021.
Tata Motors has scheduled the first drive for the Altroz Turbo in the second week of January 2021. This means that the launch of the Altroz Turbo could happen before or after the first drive. The homegrown manufacturer has sent an official invitation for an event that will be held on January 13th 2021. So, we can assume that the launch is supposed to happen within a week or so. The Altroz Turbo will be sold alongside the naturally aspirated Altroz. The premium hatchback that was launched in early 2020 is currently offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 86 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 113 Nm whereas the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 90 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 200 Nm.
The new turbocharged engine will also have a capacity of 1.2-litres. The engine is carried over from the Nexon. With the Altroz, the engine will be producing 108 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 140 Nm. We know that it will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox. However, the highlight will be the new 7-speed Dual Clutch Automatic Transmission. It will be the first Dual Clutch transmission from Tata Motors. The engine is capable of producing more power as in the Nexon the same engine produces 120 PS of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque.

In terms of exterior design, it will stay the same except for some unique paint colours and a Turbo badging. We still do not know if the Altroz Turbo will get a more sporty cabin or will carry on the same interior as the regular Altroz. The feature list is also extensive with LED Daytime Running Lamps, projector headlamps, semi TFT digital instrument cluster with Multi-information display, mood lighting, automatic headlamps, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, cornering lights, drive modes, cooled glove-box and much more. It gets a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The infotainment system is connected to speakers that are sourced from Harman.
The Altroz received 5 stars in the Global NCAP crash test which makes it the safest hatchback that you can buy. Tata offers the Altroz with ABS with EBD, Cornering Stability Control, reverse parking camera, rear parking sensors and dual front airbags. Tata Altroz starts from Rs. 5.44 lakhs ex-showroom. It will rival the Volkswagen Polo TSI and the Hyundai i20 Turbo.
