Tata Harrier is LARGER than Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass & Mahindra XUV500

The upcoming Tata Harrier SUV will be larger than its competion – the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass. The new Tata flagship offering will measure 4,598mm long, 1,894mm wide, 1,714mm tall and feature a wheelbase of 2,741mm.

These dimensions make the Harrier longer and wider than the Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass. In terms of wheelbase too, the Harrier leads. However, the XUV500 is the tallest among the quartet. All in all, the Harrier is the size champ here.

The length of the Harrier and Land Rover Discovery Sport are similar, and it comes as no surprise, for both SUVs share the same platform. While the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s D8 platform uses aluminium extensively to keep weight low, Tata Motors has opted for cheaper, high tensile steel in the OMEGA platform.

This is the main difference between both the platforms. Mechanically, the Tata Harrier will use a Fiat-sourced diesel engine and transmission while the automatic gearbox will be sourced from Hyundai. Initially though, only the manual gearbox will be offered.

The engine in question is the 2 liter Fiat Multijet turbocharged diesel engine that is also used in the Jeep Compass. This engine is expected to get a 140 Bhp-350 Nm state of tune on the Harrier. A 6 speed manual gearbox will drive the front wheels of the SUV in most variants. Tata Motors will also offer an all wheel drive layout on the top-end trim. The Harrier will get the automatic gearbox option – a 6 speed torque converter unit from Hyundai – a few months down the line.

Tata Motors is also planning to launch a petrol engined version of the Harrier once the Bharat Stage 6 emission norms kick in from April 2020. Until then though, the SUV is expected to be sold in diesel-only guise. Tata Motors is expected to play the value card by pricing the Harrier between Rs. 15-20 lakhs. At this price point, the Tata Harrier is expected to be cheaper than the Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass, and also top-spec variants of the Hyundai Creta. The SUV is expected to be loaded with features.

High quality interiors, twin airbags, ABS, ESP, reverse parking camera and other safety features, a floating infotainment console with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, multiple cubby holds and automatic climate control will be some of the many features that the Tata Harrier will be packed with. Bookings for the Tata Harrier are open at all Tata Motors dealerships. The booking amount has been pegged at Rs. 50,000.

Media drives of this SUV will begin from next month, after which we will be able to give you a comprehensive report about the Harrier. The actual launch is slated for January 2019. Deliveries will also begin from January.
