The SUV market is booming in India and the rest of the world. The latest to join the fray down here is the new Tata Harrier, which was launched on 23rd of this month. Apart from being a feature rich SUV with oodles of space and decent engine, the Harrier gets a killer price tag and starts at Ra. 12.69 lakhs. It for sure has disrupted the market but the other manufacturers are not sitting idle. In the coming times, we’ll see a slew of vehicles being launched aimed directly or indirectly at the Tata Harrier. Below are 8 such SUVs which in future will have to prove their mettle in front of the Harrier.
MG Hector
Expected Launch by: April- May 2019
MG recently revealed the name of its upcoming new SUV for India. Dubbed the Hector, it will be of the same size as the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson but will be priced much lower, around Rs. 16 lakhs- Rs. 20 lakhs price range. It will come with both petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel motor are expected to be in the region of 170 Bhp. Also, the Hector will come with both manual and automatic gearbox options. That said, the new SUV will have the most advanced features in the segment included connected apps and best in class safety standards.
Kia SP
Expected Launch by: Second half of 2019
Kia will soon make its entry into the Indian market and the first vehicle it will launch will be a SUV based on the SP Concept. It will be placed at a slight premium over the Hyundai Creta. The Kia SUV it is likely to be powered by a 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine producing 140 Bhp. A 1.5 litre petrol and diesel engine is also expected. Kia will also bring a sportier version of the SP SUV in 2020. The SUV will share its platform with the upcoming new Creta and will be quite feature rich too.
New Hyundai Creta
Expected Launch by: 2020
The current best selling compact SUV is all set to receive an update in 2020. It will be larger, more powerful and better equipped than the current model. It will be powered by 1.5 liter petrol and diesel engines on the new Creta. The SUV is also likely to be made ready for a hybrid and all-electric future. The new Creta is expected to be feature-rich, just like the current model. Also, it is likely that Hyundai will be launching a 7 seat variant too.
Skoda Kamiq

Skoda’s full size SUV, the Kodiaq has been doing well in the market and is seen as a premium product for those who want to look somewhere else than the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. The company is now aiming towards a similar approach for the compact SUV segment. The upcoming Kamiq SUV will be based on the same platform that underpins upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross. It will be showcased at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo in production form.
Volkswagen T-Cross

Volkswagen too will bring in a new challenger for the Harrier in the form of the T-Cross. Based on the MQB-A0, platform, it will share a lot of its bits from the Skoda SUV. The T-Cross is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre TSI petrol unit that churns out 128 Bhp of power and 196 Nm of torque. Other engine options could be a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that will deliver a healthy 150 Bhp and 250Nm. A third engine option will be a 1.6-litre MSI petrol that churns out 110 Bhp.
Renault Duster
Expected Launch by: End 2019
The Duster was once a hugely successful vehicle for the company but has lost its sheen of lately, mostly due to the competition. The new Duster has been already released across many parts of the world and will be launched in India before the end of this year. It will be based on the current B-Zero platform though structural changes will be done to meet the Indian crash test norms. The cabin will be all-new and the car will come with many new features. The same pair of petrol and diesel engines will be carried forward. The former will also come with an optional CVT while the latter will get an optional AMT as well as AWD.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara
Expected Launch by: 2020
Maruti Suzuki is already leading the sub 4 meter SUV segment and now wants to conquer the compact SUV segment too. For the same, the company is planning to launch. This will be done in the form of a new compact SUV, based on the Grande Vitara. The SUV will be powered by a it is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engine that the brand is currently developing in-house. It is expected to be launched by 2020.
Next-gen Mahindra XUV500

The current generation of the XUV500 is quite a good seller bur has become quite old in comparison to the competition. For the same, Mahindra is developing a new XUV500 that will be launched in 2020. It will be powered by a new 2.0-litre diesel engine which will be BSVI compliant. The power out of this engine is expected to be somewhere near 180 Bhp, which is a considerable improvement over the current 155 Bhp produced by the current XUV500’s 2.2-litre diesel engine. The overall design will see a major change along with a possible bump in size.
