Tata Harrier SUV in CarToq’s DETAILED video review

We drove the Tata Harrier a few days back in and around Jodhpur and brought you our detailed first drive review article yesterday. If you already went through it, I am sure you are aware of how good this Tata product is. The most awaited SUV of 2018 did manage to impress us a lot. And now we bring you a visual treat in the form of the video review : go ahead and click the play button right away!

The Tata Harrier, showcased as the H5X concept SUV at the 2018 Auto Expo is one of the most important Tata products ever, as much as the Nano I would say. This is finally the product that Tata can offer to global markets with a sense of pride. The Harrier has all the ingredients to be a global SUV, something we could sense during our stint with the SUV last week. While pricing will only be out next month, every other details is finally out for public consumption.

The Harrier is based on Land Rover’s D8 platform and though it has been revised for Indian usage, the underpinnings are very impressive. And so is the design language – the Harrier looks similar to the H5X concept and this means it overshadows everything else in the segment – from the Creta to the XUV500. The width and in-your-face front end turns heads easily and the same is true for the cabin – its beyond expectations.

The interiors of the Harrier look premium, very important when you are paying around 20 big ones in terms of on-road price. It has space, comfort and though is feature loaded, few customers will complain when it comes to lack of a sunroof, powered driver’s seat, wireless charging and even ambient lightning. But I love the space on offer and the JBL audio system is a blast – North Indians will love this. The largest touchscreen in the segment is practical too as it offers a never before seen ‘Drive Pro’ system. Likewise, the speedometer display too has the largest screen ever. Talk about size!

The Harrier comes with an engine sourced from FCA, the same unit that powers the Jeep Compass. However, in the Harrier it puts out less power – 140 PS. However in real world driving, the Harrier feels more than eager as you can see in the video above. Both low end tractability as well as high speed manners are expensive. What’s missing is an optional automatic but we feel Tata will offer is soon next year. And while there is no 4×4 or AWD on offer, the clever terrain response system surprised us a lot – do watch the video if you haven’t till now.

So, the Harrier looks stunning, offers a spacious and comfortable cabin and drives well in our opinion. Prices will be out next month and anything under Rs 12 lakh for the base XE and we are sure that Tata showrooms will wear a busy look with prospective customers.

Bookings for the Harrier are already open, and the first SUVs will reach dealers later this month. Production has already begun at Tata Motors’ Pimpri factory, off Pune. Deliveries will begin from January, which is also the month when the SUV will be officially launched. Test drives will also begin from January.
