Tata Motors will launch a new flagship offering early next year in the form of the Harrier SUV. The Harrier will sit above the Hexa in terms of price and positioning. It’ll take on the top-end Hyundai Creta variants and the Jeep Compass. Here are a few renders that show the upcoming SUV in bright colours.
The Harrier’s pricing has been leaked through dealer sources, and the base variant will start from about Rs. 16 lakhs while the top-end variant will be priced at a little under Rs. 20 lakhs. The Tata Harrier will be offered with a single diesel engine.
The diesel engine in question is the 2 liter Fiat Multijet turbocharged unit that’s also found on the Jeep Compass. On the Harrier though, this motor will be offered with the 140 Bhp-320 Nm state of tune. A 6 speed manual gearbox will be standard while a Hyundai sourced 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox will be offered as an option.
The SUV will be sold with front wheel drive and all wheel drive options. The all wheel driven variants are expected to get a terrain response system inspired by Land Rover SUVs while all variants will receive multi-drive modes that vary the engine response accordingly.
The Tata Harrier will be the first vehicle from Tata Motors to be based on the OMEGA platform. The OMEGA platform is a re-engineered version of the Land Rover LS550 platform. Aluminium bits of the LS550 platform will be replaced by steel parts on the OMEGA platform to reduce costs. However, key attributes such as steering tuning, suspension design and overall robustness is expected to be similar to what the Land Rover platform offers.
The Tata Harrier is expected to get a petrol engine in future. At launch though, only the diesel motor will be on offer. The official reveal of the SUV will happen next month. Bookings are already open but the launch and official price announcement will happen only in January 2019. Deliveries are likely to begin a month after launch.
