With the rising popularity of the SUVs in the Indian car market, there is an abundance of SUVs in every segment now. The D-Segment, which used to be ruled by the Mahindra XUV500 sometime back is now populated by the likes of Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. Even the top-end versions of the Hyundai Creta are similarly priced as the Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500. Which SUV out of all is the fastest? Well, here are acceleration test videos and timing from the YouTube channel DriveIndia that shows 0-100 km/h timings of all the different SUVs that compete with each other in the segment.
Fastest SUV in the segment?
It should be noted that all the vehicles used here are diesel versions. The Creta gets the engine with least displacement while the Mahindra XUV500 has the largest displacement engine among all the cars in this list. The Tata Harrier and the Jeep Compass are powered by the same 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine but the power output of both the vehicles are different.
To start with, the Tata Harrier, which is powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine generates a maximum power of 140 PS and peak torque of 350 Nm. It gets a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and there’s no automatic transmission available with the car. The Harrier is an FWD driven vehicle. As per the test, which was done by Drive India channel, the Tata Harrier takes 12.16 seconds to reach the 100 km/h mark on the speedometer. This is good timing but sadly, the Harrier is the slowest car in the group.
Jeep Compass, which also gets the same engine but a maximum power of 173 PS and 350 Nm posts a 0-100 km/h timing of 11.62 seconds. The Compass diesel also gets a 6-speed transmission as standard and there is no automatic transmission available with the diesel engine option yet. However, that is set to change soon as Jeep is preparing to launch the Trailhawk variant of the Compass.
The Mahindra XUV500 is powered by a 2.2-litre mHawk turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 155 Bhp and peak torque of 360 Nm. It is slightly quicker than the Jeep Compass and posts a 0-100 km/h timing of 11.36 seconds. The XUV500 also gets a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Only the petrol variant of the XUV500 gets the 6-speed automatic transmission.
The Hyundai Creta 1.6-litre diesel is the quickest car of all the four vehicles. The Hyundai Creta gets the smallest displacement engine that develops the least power of all. However, the weight of the vehicle and gearbox of the Creta ensure that it is much quicker than the rest of the vehicles. The Hyundai Creta can do the same run in just 10.5 seconds, which is quite quick. The Creta is powered by 126 Bhp and peak torque of 265 Nm. It gets both the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
