Tata Motors has launched two new variants of the Xenon pick-up for the Indian market. The new variants with starting prices of Rs. 5.44 lakh for the single cab and Rs. 6.34 lakh for the double cab, ex-showroom Thane, come with lower powered engines compared to the top-of-the-line Xenon XT that has been on sale in the Indian market for the past 3 years.
Tata is pitching these variants of the Xenon for more mainstream commercial applications unlike the Tata Xenon XT which is a lifestyle pick-up truck that comes in 4×2 and 4×4 variants. These new Xenon variants, especially the dual-cab which can be used as a private vehicle, is nearly Rs. 2.8 lakh cheaper than the Xenon XT lifestyle pick-up.
The new Xenon variants come with a 3-litre common-rail diesel engine putting out 115 bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque, as well as a 3-litre turbo-direct injection diesel engine especially for the single-cab variant that puts out 72 bhp of power and 223 Nm of torque. These two engine choices are aimed purely at those looking for lower running costs and commercial applications. These engines are not as refined as the 2.2-litre Dicor engine that powers the Xenon XT lifestyle pickup. The 2.2 Dicor engine in the Xenon HT puts out 140 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque, like the Tata Safari.
The load bay body style has been changed as well on the Xenon single-cab. The load bay is over 8-feet in length and the three side panels on the load bay can be dropped down for easy loading and unloading. The dual-cab variant, however, will continue to have a smaller load bay with only tailgate drop-down like the Xenon XT. The rear suspension is the standard leaf-springs for load-carrying, while the front has independent torsion beams.
The single-cab variant does not have air-conditioning, but the dual-cab has AC and power windows. The dual cab variant also gets a limited-slip rear differential that will help with rough road use. The Xenon XT has a 4×4 option, but that’s missing on these variants of the Xenon. These variants don’t get safety features such as airbags and ABS.
The Xenon pickup comes with a 3-lakh km or 3 year warranty. It comes in four color choices: Blue, red, silver and white.
These lower-priced versions of the Xenon add an interesting dimension to private buyers. At the price of an entry-level sedan, one can pick up a… pick-up, and customize it into a complete lifestyle vehicle. The dual-cab Xenon is an interesting choice for those looking for the sheer image value of a pickup.
