Tata Motors is well and truly back, and has surpassed its own targets. Tata Motors is now India’s 3rd largest car maker, after Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. In June 2018, Tata Motors beat both Honda and Mahindra to take 3rd place on the Indian market, more than 10 years after it lost this position. Tata Motors sold 18,213 units in June 2018, registering a whopping 63 % growth from the same period last year. Honda sold 17,602 cars in June 2018, again with an impressive 37.5 % sales growth to hit the fourth spot in the Indian car market. Mahindra slipped further, to fifth place with sales of 15,942 units in June 2018 – a modest sales growth of 6 %.
Tata Motors’ impressive performance has been led by the Tiago and Nexon. While the Tiago hatchback managed over 8,000 units in June 2018, remaining Tata’s best-selling car, the Nexon compact SUV did a little over 4,000 units. Together, these two cars have brought in nearly 2/3rds of Tata Motors’ overall sales. Other major sellers for Tata Motors in June 2018 were the Tigor compact sedan, with 2,674 unit sales while the Hexa luxury crossover clocked about 1,000 units. For Honda, its big comeback was led by the all-new Amaze, which registered its second consecutive month of great sales, with 9,103 units in June 2018.
Tata Motors aims to become the 3rd biggest car maker in India in yearly sales by 2019. The automaker has a slew of interesting launches that could help it get there. So far, Mahindra has been holding on to the 3rd place. Tata’s upcoming launches include the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP high performance cars, which will be priced very affordably. The automaker’s next big launch for India will happen early next year in the form of the H5X 5-seat SUV. The H5X will be followed by a premium hatchback – called the 45X for now. As for Mahindra, the fightback will begin later this year with the U321 MPV and the S201 compact SUV. The battle for the 3rd place is about to get hotter.
