Snapshot: Slow to latch on to the compact SUV/crossover bandwagon, Tata Motors plans to make amends by unveiling the Nexon crossover concept at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. The Nexon crossover will be based on the tried and tested X1 platform, which also underpins cars such as the Indica, Vista and Manza.
This platform sharing also means that Tata Motors will have access to a wide range of parts and engines, along with the new family of REVOTRON petrol motors that Tata Motors is developing for its new range of passenger cars. The Nexon could be similar to the Vista-based crossover concept that Tata Motors showcased at the first drive event of the Tata Vista D90, which has since been discontinued.
CarToq has put together two renders depicting a crossover styled hatchback from Tata Motors. With the revamped Vista/Bolt/Falcon 4 serving as a ready base for Tata Motors’ crossover, the stage seems set for a new product from the Tata stable. The crossover will take inspiration from the new design direction that Tata Motors has showcased today with the Bolt hatchback and the Zest compact sedan. The crossover styled hatchback category is gaining steam in the Indian car market given the ease with which a car maker can transform the look of a family hatchback, into something that looks a lot more butch, macho. With a flurry of automakers such as Fiat (Punto Cross), Volkswagen (Polo Cross) and Toyota (Etios Cross) taking the crossover styled hatchback route, such an approach might be taken by Tata Motors as well.
Whatever be the case, the Tata Motors pavilion at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo will tell all. Watch this space.
