Tata Motors is gearing up to enter the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment in India with two of its newest SUVs. The company, with these new SUVs, is aiming to take on the highly popular Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. For those wondering which two SUVs we are talking about, they are the Tata Curvv coupe SUV and the Sierra. The company recently showcased both of these SUVs at their booth in the 2023 Auto Expo and will most likely be launching them next year.
First off, let’s talk about the strategy that Tata Motors has chosen to enter this already competitive mid-size SUV segment. As mentioned, the company will be launching not one but two SUVs in the same segment, cluttering the segment even more. Now, to some, it may seem like the company could be cannibalizing its own products with this approach, but in turn, this strategy could be a lot more beneficial to the brand.
Let us explain this in detail. Any other automaker who might want to jump into this segment, where the Hyundai Creta is the champion, will think of entering with just one product. However, Tata’s two-SUV approach gives it an edge over the competition, as it is giving a lot more options to different types of buyers in the segment. With the Curvv coupe-style SUV, the company aims to lure in more young car buyers into the Tata family.

However, on the flip side, with the launch of the Sierra, it can also swoop in the traditional SUV lovers who want a much bigger and boxy design in an SUV. This strategy will give Tata Motors the benefit of taking in as many car buyers as possible. Another thing that will play out for Tata is that the developmental cost for both of these vehicles will come down significantly, as the company will be providing the same powertrains, suspension systems, and braking systems to both of the SUVs.
Lastly, another one of the important things with the launch of these two SUVs is that the company will be launching EV iterations of both SUVs. Tata Motors earlier stated that the Cruvv coupe SUV will most likely come with an EV drivetrain first, and then it will be followed by a traditional ICE powertrain. Also, it has been reported a few times before that this same approach will be taken with the launch of the Tata Sierra. So overall, the company will benefit from these two SUVs in the fast-growing EV segment as well.
Tata Curvv
The Tata Curvv will be the brand and the country’s one of the first coupe-like SUVs and will be a unique offering. From the front, this SUV will mostly look like the updated Nexon Facelift, but from the rear, it will look completely different. It will boast a sloping roof design which will provide it with an extremely distinct and sporty look. In terms of the powertrains, the Curvv is expected to be offered with electric, petrol, and CNG powertrains, and it is rumored to be priced in the range of Rs 15-20 lakh.
Tata Sierra
On the other hand, the Tata Sierra which was recently announced to be locked in production will be a much more traditional-looking SUV with a big road presence. The Sierra in the production version will most likely be launched with an all-electric drivetrain. However, as of yet, the company has not revealed any power or range figures for the SUV. The company will reportedly also introduce an internal combustion engine version of this SUV. As per the reports, it will be the newly introduced 1.5-liter four-cylinder T-GDi engine which will be able to generate a maximum power of 170 PS and peak torque of 280 Nm.
