Tata Motors wins CII Design Excellence awards for Zest and Ultra

Tata Motors has bagged two awards at the CII Design Excellence Awards of 2014. The automaker’s best selling passenger car, the Zest compact sedan, and the Ultra commercial vehicle won top honours. The Design Excellence Awards were instituted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2011, as a means for boosting national competitiveness in the country’s design field.

Zest, the marquee launch in the PV category dazzles across categories while Ultra claims the top spot in the CV category

Mumbai, 21 November, 2014: Tata Motors, with the Zest from its Passenger Vehicle (PV) and the Ultra from its Commercial Vehicle (CV) stable, has won the top honors at the recently concluded 2014 CII Design Excellence Awards. The Design Excellence awards were initiated by CII in 2011 to establish Design as a tool for national competitiveness in the country.


The Zest won the overall award in the ‘Mobility’ category – from among a field of more than 10 vehicles, including Commercial Vehicles, Special Purpose Vehicles and two wheelers, prevailing over competition from five different categories. Furthermore, Zest also achieved the first rank in the PV category to be crowned the best designed car. On the other hand, Ultra won the best designed truck award in the four-wheeled CV category.

Zest is the first car conceived under the HorizoNext strategy and it clearly exhibits the new Tata Motors design language, characterized by three key elements – Humanity Line, Diamond DLO, Slingshot Line – that give the vehicle a sense of humanity, friendliness, roominess, dynamism, stability, poise and purpose. With a classy new forward pouncing stance and well-sculpted body, the design portrays a sense of power and agility. The car has a good balance of elements like a sedan profile, the strong wedge of the shoulder-line, the wide stretched front, rear and sporty 15” Alloy Wheels. Premium interiors have been coupled with a well-integrated infotainment screen and next-generation 3-spoke steering wheel in the Zest. The vehicle’s wing-shaped central instrument cluster Bezel, gear knob, precisely detailed air vents and sculpturally designed console, connected in a single wing-shaped graphic, ensure that the Zest has the best design attributes.


The all-new range of Tata ULTRA trucks bring in global design that matches aesthetics with enhanced comfort, fuel-efficiency and low cost of ownership to offer the best business proposition to operators. On the interiors, the Tata ULTRA range comes with a world-class hydraulic 45 degree tiltable cabin, which has been designed with elegant and stylish looks, with sufficient storage capacity and features like dash-mounted gear lever, AC provision and a new generation instrument cluster. The ULTRA range of trucks has been developed keeping customers central to the product development process, seamlessly integrating functionality with aesthetics and comfort.
