Tata Motors is making bold moves in response to market changes, particularly with its Nexon sub-compact SUV. After facing a mild decline in sales in the month of April 2024, Tata is introducing new base variants for both petrol and diesel engines, along with revising prices under the Smart Persona initiative.

The Tata Nexon gained instant popularity in the Indian market due to its crash test ratings and safety features. Any Indian who wanted to buy a safe car on a budget could blindly opt for the Tata Nexon. However, it is the first time that the SUV has seen a decline in sales in the month of April 2024.

This decline can be attributed to the new rival in the market, Mahindra XUV 3XO. In response, Tata is launching new base variants for both petrol and diesel engines. With the drop in sales of the Nexon, the Punch EV has claimed the title of best-selling SUV.

New Tata Nexon Petrol Base Variant Launched

In order to boost sales, Tata has introduced the Smart (O) base petrol variant, priced at Rs. 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This variant may either replace or sit below the previous Smart Petrol 5MT, which was priced at Rs. 8.15 lakh (ex-showroom).

Additionally, Tata has reduced the prices of the Smart+ Petrol 5MT and Smart+ S Petrol 5MT variants by Rs. 31,000 and around Rs. 41,000 respectively. Despite the price reduction, the Smart+ Petrol 5MT now includes a reverse camera feature. The prices for all other variants are the same.

New Base Diesel Variants

Previously, diesel engine was only available from the Pure Persona variant which is priced at Rs. 11.10 lakhs. Now, the new Smart+ Diesel 6MT variant is introduced. This new diesel base variant is priced at Rs. 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), making it Rs. 1.1 lakh cheaper than before. The Smart+ S Diesel 6MT variant is priced at Rs. 10.59 lakh (ex-showroom).

Key Features

The base Smart (O) variant which is available in the petrol engine option only offers features such as six airbags, an Electronic Stability Program, LED headlamps & tail lamps with DRLs, Drive modes (Eco, City and Sport), two-spoke steering wheel with illuminated logo, front power windows and reverse parking sensors. This variant is available at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 7.99 lakhs.

In addition to the features offered in the Smart (O) variant, the Smart+ variant offers 17.78 cm Touchscreen Infotainment by HARMAN, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 4 Speakers, Reverse Camera, Shark Fin Antenna, Steering Mounted Controls, All Power Windows and Electrically Adjustable ORVMs. This variant, after the price cut, costs Rs. 8.89 lakhs.

The Smart+ S variant includes all the features from the Smart+ trim but it offers some extra features such as auto headlamps, voice-assisted electric sunroof and rain-sensing wipers. After a price cut of Rs. 41k, this trim now costs Rs. 9.39 lakhs.

Effect of the Mahindra XUV 3XO?

It’s evident that the recent launch of the Mahindra XUV 3XO has influenced Tata’s decision to introduce these updates. Despite the changes, the base Smart Persona variant still lacks automatic variants.
