Tata Motors will showcase the AMT variants of the Nexon sub-4 meter compact SUV at the 2018 Auto Expo. The automaker may even launch the Nexon AMTs at the Expo. Now, there are new details about the upcoming automatic SUV from Tata.
The Nexon’s automated manual transmission (AMT) will work with the petrol and diesel Nexon’s 6 speed gearboxes. It will get a creep function making it very useful for crawling in city traffic’s stop and go conditions. It will also get a manual mode that allows drivers to shift gears up and down by pushing the gear lever forward and backwards.
Another new feature on the Nexon’s AMT will be the kickdown function, which will get activated and downshift when the driver floors the accelerator. This function is to give the vehicle good acceleration when needed. This feature is expected to be very useful during overtaking maneuvers, greatly minimizing the lag that AMTs are otherwise known for. It is unclear if the Nexon AMT will have a hill-hold function, which stops the vehicle from rolling backwards while it’s started from a slope. The Nexon AMT is expected to be offered in mid (XTA) and top-end (XZA) trims.
The AMT variants of the Nexon will continue to use the 1.2 liter-4 cylinder turbocharged petrol and 1.5 liter-4 cylinder turbocharged diesel engines. The petrol engine produces 108 Bhp-170 Nm while the diesel makes 108 Bhp-250 Nm. The Nexon AMTs are expected to be priced about Rs. 50,000 more than the manual variants of the compact SUV.
Yet, they will be the cheapest petrol-automatic and diesel-automatic compact SUVs in the Indian market given the price advantage the Nexon already enjoys among its rivals. Expect prices of the Nexon Petrol AMT to start from Rs. 7.8 lakhs and the Diesel AMT to start from Rs. 8.7 lakhs. The Nexon will also be the only sub-4 meter compact SUV in India to be offered with automatic options on both petrol and diesel variants.
