Tata Punch receives 5 star safety rating from Global NCAP: Safer than Altroz, Mahindra XUV300 & Nexon

After revealing the safety rating of the upcoming Tata Punch by mistake, G-NCAP has now officially revealed the crash test video. The Tata Punch has received a five-star safety rating, higher than any other car in the segment. The all-new Tata Punch is likely to become the most affordable car in the market to get a five-star safety rating. Tata will reveal the prices of the Punch on 18th October. Notably, the Punch scored better than three other 5 star GNCAP rated cars sold in India – the Tata Altroz, the Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV300.

As per the official G-NCAP, the base variant of the Tata Punch was tested. The base variant comes with dual-front airbags, ABS and ISOFIX anchors for mounting the child seat. The upcoming Tata Punch has scored 16.45 out of 17 in the adult safety rating. For child safety, the Punch scored 40.89 out of 49. In comparison, the Tata Altroz (which shares its Alfa platform with the Punch) managed 16.13/17 in the adult safety rating and 29/49 in the child safety rating. The Mahindra XUV300 managed 16.42/17 and 37.44/49, while the Tata Nexon bagged 16.06/17 and 25/49 points in adult and child safety ratings respectively.

The crash test was done at a speed of 64 km/h and the bodyshell integrity is rated as stable. G-NCAP also says that the footwell areas is rated as stable as well. However, G-NCAP said that safety can be further improved by adding Electronic Stability Control as a standard feature in the car.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said,

“Tata has once again achieved a top safety rating for adult protection and four stars for children in a new and popular model category. This voluntary test result confirms the direction of Tata’s journey towards safer cars for India. Our test procedures demonstrate Tata’s progress in becoming one of the safety leaders in the Indian market with our current protocols. As the protocols evolve to include electronic stability control (ESC), side impact head protection and pedestrian protection, we would encourage Tata to maintain this leadership position.”

The Tata Motors line-up currently has the most number of five-star rated cars in India. Starting with the Nexon, the Tata Altroz also received a five-star rating. The Punch has joined the group of top scorers.

Apart from these, many other cars from Tata Motors have received four-star safety ratings as well. These cars include the Tata Tiago, Tata Tigor and the Tigor EV. The Tata Tigor EV became the first-ever EV from India to get crash test ratings. Only a few cars in the Tata model line-up like the Harrier and the Safari are yet to get crash test ratings.

The all-new Tata Punch is based on the same platform as the Tata Altroz. Both the cars on the ALFA platform get the same safety ratings as well. The all-new Punch will come powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that will get a manual as well as an AMT. The prices will be announced on 18th October.
