If the new Tata Sierra was available, would you have bought the 2020 Mahindra Thar?

When tata showcased the Sierra concept at the 2020 Auto Expo, it raised a lot of eyebrows and for many bought back a lot of memories too. Let’s accept the fact that the production version of the Sierra is still far away in the future and Tata has not said anything on the Sierra and its launch. But, what if the Sierra was present in the market today? Do you think it would have been a popular choice? Would you have bought it over the all-new Thar?

The success of the all-new Thar and its popularity in the market has got us thinking what if Tata Sierra was present in the market today. Yes, the Sierra did not do very well when it came out the first time but many believe that it way ahead of the market. If the market was not ready for the Sierra way back in 1991. Since then, the Indian market has matured a lot and dynamics have changed quite a bit. SUVs are the newest trend in the market and model line-up of Tata Motors has also vastly changed to one of the safest cars in the market.

Now coming back to the Sierra, if it was in production today, it would have looked glamourous, especially looking at the modern design language of the Tata cars. Even the Sierra concept’s design is a homage to the original Sierra with the fixed glass windows of the rear extending to the roof! It sure would have looked like a modern-classic design just like the Thar! But would it have been more impactful?

Tata would have used the same 2.0-litre diesel engine to power the Sierra, which also powers the Harrier. A petrol engine? Well, that’s doubtful. However, the Sierra would have been much more comfortable, much more suitable for families and much more spacious too. Given the fact, that it might not be as good as the Mahindra Thar when it comes to off-roading, would you have still chose the Sierra?

Why buy the Mahindra Thar?

Within months of its launch, the Mahindra Thar is selling like hot cakes with waiting period of over 8 months in some cities. Well, there are quite a few customisation options available in the market too. So if you’re someone looking for a pure off-roader and a car that can be used on the weekends for your family outing and a visit to your friend’s home, the Thar seems to be a perfect vehicle. However, the ride quality of the Thar, the space for only two passengers in the rear and virtually zero boot space also makes it quite impractical.

Why buy the Tata Sierra?

It would offer a solid cabin unlike the Mahindra Thar that offers a soft-top and a fibre plastic hardtop. Also, the Sierra would offered proper space in the rear so that the occupants can actually enjoy their time in the space. Also, it would have offered much better ride quality, especially on the highways. Since Sierra is not off-road focussed vehicle, it would have been a different kind of vehicle but with the same classic-modern looks and feel.
