Tata Tiago has a whopping 25 variants: We explain!

The Tiago hatchback is currently the best selling car in the Tata Motors lineup in India and currently accounts for nearly half of the carmaker’s sales numbers every month. Tata Motors has constantly kept the hatchback updated since its launch in 2016 and with the arrival of the new JTP hot hatchback, there are 25 different variants of the Tiago currently on sale in India.

While that may seem shocking to you, there is a good reason for all these different variants of the Tiago as we shall explain in this post.

The Tata Tiago was launched as a replacement for the Tata Bolt and when launched in 2016 even featured football superstar Lionel Messi as its brand ambassador. With the arrival of its new hot hatchback JTP version, the Tiago range now covers a big price segment. Prices for the Tiago start at Rs 3.2 lakhs for the base XB variant while the JTP is priced at Rs 6.4 lakhs which means that the top-spec Tiago costs twice as much as the entry-level car.

The regular Tata Tiago is available in 22 different variants with 12 petrol and 10 diesel models currently being offered to customers. These include the Wizz special edition models for both petrol and diesel variants that was launched last September. The reason for the two extra models in the Tiago petrol range is the option for the AMT gearbox that is only offered with the Revotron petrol engine.

In addition to the 22 variants of the regular Tiago, Tata Motors also offers the hatchback in two more guises – NRG and JTP. The NRG variant which is offered in both petrol and diesel guises is a crossover version of the Tiago which offers a more rugged look and increased ground clearance. The Tiago NRG which was launched in September is the first cross-hatch from Tata Motors and uses the same petrol and diesel engines.

The NRG petrol like the rest of the Tiago range is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that produces 84 Bhp and 114 Nm of torque. The diesel variants of the Tiago lineup use a 1.05-litre diesel engine that cranks out 69 Bhp and 140 Nm of torque.

The final and most powerful version of the Tiago hatchback is the Tiago JTP. The Tiago JTP is also the most expensive variant of the Tata hatchback currently on sale in India and is priced at Rs 6.4 lakhs ex-showroom (Delhi). The Tiago JTP is powered by a turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that powers the regular hatchback. The engine cranks out 112 Bhp and 150 Nm of torque which is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Tiago JTP sprints from 0-100 km/h in 10 seconds and offers better handling thanks to a lowered suspension setup and a recalibrated steering setup.

The Tiago offers options for almost everyone with its 25 different variants. For those looking for a good car at an affordable price, the lower and mid-spec variants of the Tiago offer a host of choices. For those looking for a car that is easy to drive in the city, the AMT versions are available. The NRG is the variant for those looking for a car that looks rugged while the JTP is the one for those looking for a good driver’s car.
