Tata Motors showcased the Tiago JTP hot hatchback, along with the Tigor JTP high-performance compact sedan at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. Both cars will be launched in India later this year, as affordable high-performance offerings. In fact, the Tiago JTP is expected to be the most powerful 100+ Bhp car priced under Rs. 6.5 lakhs, offering great value for money. The car has just been spotted testing on Indian roads. Notably, this is the first time that Tata Motors has publicly tested the Tiago JTP, which also indicates that the launch could be impending. Tata Motors hasn’t revealed an exact launch timeline yet, for both cars.
Both the Tiago and Tigor JTP models will feature a 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol engine borrowed from the Nexon. The engine will be tuned to output 108 Bhp-150 Nm, outputs that are significantly higher than that of the stock Tiago and Tigor petrol engines that make 84 Bhp-114 Nm. A close ratio 5-speed gearbox meant to maximize acceleration and in-gear performance will be offered as standard on both cars. The cars will also feature stiffer suspension set-ups for sharper handling. They will also get minor stylistic changes both on the inside and outside. These changes have already been revealed when the cars were showcased at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo.
Currently, the least-priced 100 Bhp petrol car in India is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS, which is priced at well over Rs. 8 lakhs. When the Tiago JTP arrives here, it’s likely to be priced at under Rs. 6.5 lakhs, making it a lot cheaper than the Baleno. This will make the Tata Tiago JTP India’s least-priced hot hatchback. Likewise, the Tata Tigor JTP is expected to be India’s least-priced sporty sedan, with prices likely to start from under Rs. 7.5 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. Both the Tiago and Tigor JTP represent Tata Motors’ maiden foray into the world of high-performance, fun cars.
