The Tata Nano is now discontinued, making the Tiago hatchback the automaker’s cheapest offering in the Indian market. Affordability is a major purchase criterion in the entry level segments, where a lot of buyers are among the younger lot. With the Tiago, Tata Motors has been actively targeting younger buyers. The Tiago’s latest TVC, inspired by the Gully Boy’s rap, aims to connect with younger buyers.

The Tata Tiago’s prices start from Rs. 4.2 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. The car was first launched in 2016, with a  starting price of just Rs. 3.2 lakhs. Constant feature additions and price revisions have now taken the price of the  car higher but the Tiago continues to be one of the best priced cars in its segment.

The car is a size larger than its direct competitors – the Hyundai Santro and the all-new Maruti WagonR. Also, it’s  much more powerful and offers a diesel engine, which is not offered by competitors. The Tata Tiago’s petrol engine is the 1.2 liter-3 cylinder REVOTRON unit with 84 Bhp-115 Nm.

This engine gets 5 speed manual and AMT options. The diesel engine offered by the car is a 1.1 liter-3 cylinder  turbocharged unit called the REVOTORQ. It makes 69 Bhp-140 Nm, and is offered with a 5 speed manual gearbox as  standard. The Tiago also has a high performance JTP variant that was launched recently.

The Tiago JTP is India’s cheapest hot hatchback, and is powered by a 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine that makes  112 Bhp-150 Nm. This engine gets a 5 speed manual gearbox with revised gear ratios to maximise in-gear acceleration. The Tiago JTP’s prices start from Rs. 6.39 lakhs. The car also offers stiffer suspension for better handling, and revised interiors that look a lot more sportier than the stock Tiago’s.

Tata Motors has further expanded the Tiago’s line up with the addition of the NRG trim. The Tiago NRG is basically  Tata’s take on a hatchback based crossover. Butch styling thanks to cladding, and a higher ground clearance due to  raised suspension are two major changes on the Tiago NRG. The car is priced above most of the Tiago regular variants, and prices start from Rs. 5.60 lakhs.

By the end of this year, Tata Motors is set to give the Tiago a mid life makeover. The facelifted car has already  been spotted testing on Indian roads. It’s expected to get a minor makeover in terms of styling and new features o  the inside. The Tiago Facelift is not likely to see a price increase as Tata Motors has already raised prices of the car by quite a bit in the past year or so.
