Mahindra has been able to gather 75,000 bookings of the Thar in just 12 months. That is a huge number for a 4×4 SUV. For reference, the Mahindra XUV700 was able to bag in the same amount of booking but it is a family SUV and is considerably more comfortable.
NO alternative
The reason behind Thar’s success is that it does not have any direct rival. Yes, Force has launched the Gurkha but it costs Rs. 13.59 lakhs ex-showroom and is a bare-bone vehicle. It will attract people who want a dedicated off-roader whereas Thar is a lifestyle vehicle. It can be used in the city as well as off-road. And most of the people use their vehicles in the city only. Thar is also less expensive as it starts at Rs. 12.78 lakhs ex-showroom and packs in more features and equipment.
Offered in many variants
Mahindra ensured that the new Thar attracts more people. So, they are offering it with a diesel engine as well as a petrol engine. Both the engines are offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.
Earlier, Thar was offered only with a diesel engine that came mated to a manual gearbox. Mahindra is still offering a 4×4 drivetrain as standard on every variant of the Thar. You can get it as a convertible or a factory-fitted hardtop. Earlier, people used to get their hardtops fitted at aftermarket shops. Also, a hardtop is more durable, easier to maintain and provides better protection from the environment.
Great safety rating
Mahindra Thar has scored a 4-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test. This makes it one of the safest SUVs that you can get. Moreover, Mahindra offers the Thar with roll cage, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ESP, Brake Assist and High-Speed Alert as standard.
More comfortable than the previous Thar
The new Thar is fitted with a new suspension setup and a reworked ladder-frame chassis. This has helped in improving the riding dynamics and the ride quality of the SUV. Mahindra also increased the dimensions of the new Thar significantly. This means more cabin space. Also, now the Thar is offered with front-facing rear seats which are more comfortable than side-facing rear seats.
