Tesla Model 3 electric car spied testing in India ahead of official launch

Tesla is working on entering the Indian market. Earlier it was reported that the manufacturer has imported three Model 3 cars in India for testing purposes. These cars will be used for Automotive Research of India or ARAI approvals and for other compliances. Now, one of the three, Model 3 has been spotted in Pune. The vehicle was coloured in a blue shade with a red number plate. The pictures has been uploaded on Instagram by @carcrazy.india.

Model 3 is the most affordable vehicle that Tesla is currently making. The Tesla Model 3 is available in three variants in the international market. There is the Standard Range Plus, Long Range and Performance.  The base variant i.e. Standard Range Plus has a range of 423 km, a top speed of 225 kmph and can hit a ton in just 5.3 seconds. The mid variant i.e. Long Range has a range of 568 km, a top speed of 233 kmph and can hit a ton in just 4.2 seconds. Then there is the Performance which is aimed towards enthusiasts who are considering switching to an electric vehicle. The Performance variant has a top speed of 260 kmph, a 0-100 kmph time of 3.1 seconds and it has a range of 506 km. The Tesla Model 3 will be competing against the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XE and the Audi A4.

It is not yet known what all variants Tesla will be bringing to India. What we can expect is that Tesla will be bringing the Model 3 to India through the CBU or Completely Built Unit route rather than manufacturing them here. This means that the price tags of the Model 3 will be quite high.

We can expect the price tag of the Tesla Model 3 to be somewhere around Rs. 60 lakhs. However, once Tesla moves to CKD import which is a Completely Knocked Down unit then the price can lower. The price can fall even further drastically if they start manufacturing the Model 3 in India itself.

The design of the Model 3 looks very futuristic and minimal. When you step inside the cabin, you would notice that there is nothing to distract the driver. The dashboard has a single touchscreen which is huge and is horizontally mounted. You control all the functions of the car through this touchscreen. Even if you want to adjust the airflow from the air conditioning vents, you would have to do that through the touchscreen.

Tesla has registered itself in Karnataka with the name of Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited. They have set up the headquarter in Bangaluru. The manufacturer will be opening up showrooms in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru. Tesla has hired many well-known people. They have hired Nishant Nishant as their charging manager. Nishant has worked with a well known Indian electric scooter company, Ather Energy. They have hired Chithra Thomas as a human resource executive. Chithra has previously worked with Walmart. Currently, there are six members with Tesla which includes Samir Jain, Manuj Khurana, Vaibhav Taneja and Nitika Chhabra. The reports say that the team is expected to expand in the coming months.
