The Volkswagen Up! small car was seen testing in India recently. This right-hand drive Up! has sparked rumours about Volkswagen’s plans to launch the Up! small car in India.
Ever since the Up! was first unveiled everyone has been hoping that Volkswagen launches it in India. At present it seems like the company was testing the car to see if it was feasible for Indian roads. Moreover the car cannot be launched in India in its present form. The Up! three-door is unlikely to come to India and Volkswagen will need the five door variant to suit the needs of Indian buyers.
One of the cars that were caught testing was an automatic variant, which would likely be too expensive to attract customers in India. It is powered by a 3-cylinder engine that makes 59 bhp of power in one variant and 74 bhp of power in the other. Internationally this is the most affordable car from Volkswagen’s stable. The mileage of the Up! is expected to be in the range of 19 – 22 kmpl and it could be priced between Rs. 4 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh. Volkswagen’s sister brand Skoda also has its own version of the Up! called the Skoda Citigo. If the Volkswagen Up! makes it to India then the Citigo will also likely make an appearance as an even cheaper, rebadged version of the Up! for the small car market.
