While petrol cars are increasingly getting more frugal, diesel ones still rule the roost in terms of fuel efficiency. Almost all mainstream diesel cars on sale in the country offer a higher mileage than their petrol-powered counterparts. Here is a list of the best mileage diesel cars in India.
#1 Maruti Swift – 28.4 kmpl
With an ARAI-certified mileage of 28.4 kmpl, the new-gen Swift is the most fuel-efficient diesel car in the entire country. The Swift’s diesel variant gets its juice from a Fiat-sourced 1.3-Liter turbo-diesel motor that outputs a maximum power of 75 PS along with a peak torque of 190 Nm. While the earlier two generations of the Swift came with the same engine, the latest version turns out to be more frugal because of its lower weight and gear ratios that have been optimised in favour of fuel efficiency.
= #1 Maruti Dzire – 28.4 kmpl
Even the latest-gen Dzire is as fuel efficient as the new Swift, which makes it share the top spot with its hatchback-sibling in our list of best mileage diesel cars in India. The Dzire diesel also enjoys an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 28.4 kmpl, which isn’t at all surprising. Both the cars get the same 75 PS-190 Nm engine. Also, both have a kerb weight of 985 KGs.
#2 Maruti Ciaz – 28.09 kmpl
At the second spot is the diesel-powered Ciaz. The Ciaz is powered by a more powerful version of the Swift’s 1.3-liter oil burner. Thanks to a variable geometry turbo, the 1.3-liter motor on the Ciaz outputs 90 PS and 200 Nm. However, the mileage sees only a small drop due to the SHVS micro-hybrid system that the Ciaz comes with. Also, the Ciaz diesel weighs only 1,135 KGs, which helps it offer a high fuel efficiency.
#3 Maruti Baleno – 27.39 kmpl
Even the third spot in our list of best mileage diesel cars in India belongs to a Maruti Suzuki offering. With an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.39 kmpl, the Baleno diesel is the third most fuel-efficient car in the country. It is powered by the same 75 PS-190 Nm motor that powers the Swift and the Dzire. With a kerb weight of only 985 KGs, the Baleno is as light as the Swift and the Dzire. However, it’s slightly less frugal owing to a different gearing.
#4 Honda Jazz – 27.30 kmpl
With an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.30 kmpl, the Honda Jazz is the fourth most fuel efficient diesel car in the country. The Jazz diesel is powered by a 1.5-liter iDTEC turbocharged motor that outputs 100 PS and 200 Nm. The Jazz also offers a spacious and a practical cabin. Thanks to the low running cost and high practicality, it’s among the more sensible Diesel-powered options in its segment.
#5 Tata Tiago – 27.28 kmpl
Next car on our list is the diesel-supping Tata Tiago. The Tiago offers a 1.05-liter turbo-diesel engine that outputs a maximum power of 70 PS along with a peak torque of 140 Nm. This makes the car sufficiently powerful for all common applications while an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 27.28 kmpl makes it pretty frugal.
#6 Maruti Ignis – 26.80 kmpl
The Ignis is yet another Maruti in our list of best mileage diesel cars in India. The Ignis shares its 1.3-liter turbodiesel engine with the Baleno. This motor outputs 75 PS and 190 Nm. The Ignis even shares its lightweight platform with the Baleno, which helps it offer a similarly high mileage figure. With an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 26.80 kmpl, the Ignis finds the sixth spot on our list here.
#7 Ford Figo – 25.83 kmpl
Next in line is the diesel-sipping variant of the Ford Figo, which offers an ARAI-test efficiency of 25.83 kmpl. Powering the Figo is a 1.5-liter TDCi turbodiesel engine that outputs 100 PS and 215 Nm. The new-gen Figo also offers a good mix of ride quality and sporty handling characteristics. Hence, the Figo makes for a good option for all those looking for a slightly sporty but a cheap-to-run hatchback.
= #7 Ford Aspire – 25.83 kmpl
The Aspire is nothing but a Figo with a compact-sedan body form. It gets the same 1.5-liter engine and, therefore, even the same fuel efficiency. This makes the Aspire the second-most fuel efficient diesel-sipping compact sedan in the country.
#8 Honda Amaze – 25.80 kmpl
With an ARAI-test fuel efficiency of 25.80 kmpl, the diesel-sipping Amaze is the third-most fuel-efficient compact sedan in the country. It gets the same 1.5-liter iDTEC motor that powers the Jazz. Even for the Amaze, this engine offers 100 PS and 200 Nm.
#9 Honda City – 25.60 kmpl
Next in line is the diesel variant of the Honda City. The City is a more premium C2-segmenter that shares its engine with Amaze and the Jazz. The 100 PS of maximum power even helps the City come across as a more powerful option compared to the Maruti Ciaz.
#10 Honda W-RV – 25.50 kmpl
The least fuel-efficient car on our list of best mileage diesel cars in India is the Honda WR-V. The WR-V is basically a crossover version of the Jazz and even looks a lot like the car it’s based on. Even this car is powered by the company’s 1.5-liter iDTEC unit. It offers a decent mileage of 25.50 kmpl (as per ARAI).
