Toyota will be launching its Hilux pick-up truck in January 2022. The truck was also recently spotted during a TVC shoot in Gurugram. Now, according to chethan.ram from Team-bhp, Toyota dealerships have started accepting bookings for Hilux. The booking amount is set to Rs. 2 lakhs.

It is expected that Toyota will offer the Hilux with two diesel engine options. There would be a 2.4-litre diesel engine and a 2.8-litre diesel engine. The 2.4-litre unit is already doing duty on the Innova Crysta whereas the 2.8-litre diesel engine is offered on the Fortuner.

The 2.4-litre unit produces 150 PS of max power and 360 Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. This engine will be offered on the lower variants and will drive only the rear wheels.

Then we have the 2.8-litre unit that puts out 204 PS of max power and 500 Nm of peak torque. It is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Toyota can offer this engine as a rear-wheel drive and a four-wheel drive. We would have to wait for the official launch of the Hilux so that the engine and gearbox options can be confirmed.

Platform and dimensions

Hilux is based on the same platform as the Fortuner and the Innova Crysta. The platform is known as IMV-2 but Toyota has increased the wheelbase to 3,085 mm. When compared, the Fortuner’s wheelbase is 2,745 mm and Innova Crysta’s wheelbase measures 2,750 mm.

The length of the Hilux is 5,325 mm, width is 1,855 mm and it has a height of 1,865 mm. The ground clearance of Hilux is 216 mm. It weighs around 2.1 tonnes.

Features and interior

There will be a lot of parts sharing between Fortuner and Hilux. So, expect some of the interior bits to be carried forward from Fortuner to Hilux. The seats, upholstery, steering wheel, instrument cluster, gear lever, central console, door pads, multi-information display and infotainment system could be the same as the Fortuner.

Feature list will include push button to start/stop the engine, multi-function steering wheel, automatic climate control, hill start assist, rear parking camera with rear parking sensors, hill descent control, cruise control, upto six airbags, leather upholstery, USB charger, 12V charging socket and much more. There would also be an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that will support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and will probably come connected to a JBL sound system.

Exterior

The exterior is not the same as the Fortuner. It gets a different front-end design, new LED projector headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps, thick plastic cladding on the wheel arches and vertical LED tail lamps.

Toyota will launch the Hilux in top-spec double cab body style in our country. There are also outside rearview mirrors finished in chrome, multi-spoke alloy wheels that are expected to measure 18 inches and an LED high mounted stop lamp. The Hilux does have more road presence because of its sheer size. The length of Fortuner is 4,795 mm whereas Hilux measures 5,325 mm.
