Toyota has just launched the Urban Cruiser Hyryder compact SUV in India. Prices start from Rs. 15.11 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, and go all the way up to Rs. 18.99 lakh for the top-end trim. The Toyota Hyryder is offered only in four trims – one in petrol mild hybrid that also gets all wheel drive layout, and three in strong hybrid, all of which get a CVT automatic gearbox as standard. The Toyota Hyryder takes on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the Nissan Kicks.
The Toyota Hyryder is the segment’s first Strong-Hybrid vehicle
The Hyryder needs to be mainly compared with diesel automatic variants of competing SUVs given the fact that the Hyryder Strong Hybrid gets a claimed fuel efficiency of nearly 28 Kmpl, which is diesel-like! Seen from that angle, the pricing of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder (Rs. 15.11 lakh for the base strong hybrid variant) seems quite competitive as the best selling Hyundai Creta Diesel Automatic starts from Rs. 18.09 lakh.
The SUV is built at Toyota’s Bidadi factory, near Bengaluru, alongside its badge-engineered sibling – the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The Grand Vitara will also be launched by the end of this month. Bookings for both the Toyota Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara were already on. Deliveries of the Hyryder will commence shortly while deliveries of the Grand Vitara will happen post launch, in late September.

- The SUV gets an all wheel drive layout on the mild hybrid manual trim, making it the most capable compact SUV on sale in India.
The strong-hybrid powertrain of the Hyryder consists of a 1.5 liter-4 cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine (92 Bhp-122 Nm) running on the Atkinson’s cycle, and an electric motor that puts out 78 Bhp-141 Nm. This powertrain is paired to a eCVT automatic gearbox, and combined output stands at 114 Bhp. The other option – a mild hybrid powertrain – consists of a 1.5 liter K15C naturally aspirated petrol engine (102 Bhp-135 Nm) paired with an electric motor that offers assist during acceleration. The K15C petrol engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox as standard, and offers an all wheel drive system.
As for features, the Toyota Hyryder gets a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, wireless charger, a full digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, head-up display, connected car tech and voice assist with Google and Siri compatibility, 17-inch alloy wheels, 6 airbags, disc brakes on all four wheels, ESP, traction control and hill-hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, speed alerts, seat belt reminder warning and 3 point seatbelts for all passengers including those seated at the rear.
