Toyota Innova Electric MPV spied testing for the first time

The increasing EV fever across the globe has made almost every manufacturer to offer an electric vehicle in their portfolio. And recently the Japanese multinational automaker Toyota Motor Corporation, which still does not has an EV in the range, was spotted testing an electric car on the roads. The vehicle seen during the testing was none other than an electrified version of Toyota’s highly popular MPV the Innova Crysta.

A completely undisguised electric Innova Crysta was seen on the streets of Indonesia. It is to be noted that this is not the first time that the world has seen this vehicle. The same electrified Innova Crysta was showcased by the Japanese carmaker at the Indonesian International Motor Show earlier this year in March. At the time Toyota announced that this vehicle will be used for research purposes only.

As of yet, we do not have any details on the specifications of this vehicle. However, it is widely believed that Toyota could be testing the batteries and electric motors and other important EV technology with this test mule. As for this specific vehicle we can note from the spy shots that the vehicle borrows almost everything from the standard Innova Crysta apart from a few things. The major difference on the outside of this new EV Innova is its notable blanked-out grille and a modified bumper. Additionally distinct from Crysta’s alloy wheel design is the wheel style itself.

From the pictures that have surfaced online, it can also be noted that the Innova EV’s cabin appears to be pretty similar to the ICE Innova’s. The electric MPV boasted an analogue instrument cluster as part of its characteristics, along with the infotainment system that shows important data like battery life, range, etc. Apart from these not a whole lot of differences were spotted on the Innova EV.

For those wondering if this electrified Innova will make its way to the roads, it is still a mystery. As of yet, we don’t have any information on the battery packs, electric motors, range, price, or launch date of this vehicle. Currently, we can only wait to see what are the plans of the Japanese automaker with this electrified Innova.

In other Toyota Kirloskar Motors Limited (TKML) news, recently it was noted that the company has removed its best-selling Innova Crysta from its website, prompting speculations that the MPV would be discontinued to make way for the Innova HyCross. Currently, it is not confirmed if this is the case but it has been speculated by various experts and sources. It is believed that the Innova Crysta could come back soon, but only in lower trims, with the 2.4 liter diesel engine as standard.

The Toyota Innova Crysta’s lower trims could be offered for the cab operator market in the country, while the Innova HyCross will be marketed as an upscale people mover for family vehicle consumers. Additionally, the Innova Crysta’s 2.7 litre normally aspirated petrol engine will be dropped, making the MPV a diesel-only vehicle. Toyota’s move is intended to make the new Innova HyCross stand out from the Crysta.
