Toyota Innova 2.8 vs Hyundai Verna 1.6 in a classic drag race [Video]

It is a common notion that cars with bigger engines are faster on the roads but that is not always the case. High-end performance cars come with small engines and are tuned to produce massive power and torque. Well, to demonstrate it in real life, here is a drag race that involves a pre-facelift Hyundai Verna 1.6 diesel and Toyota Innova 2.8 diesel automatic. Here are the results.

The drag race was done by Drive King on a relatively empty highway. While the highway was secluded, there were a few vehicles around and doing drag races in this way on the public roads is illegal. Drag races should always be done in closed environments to ensure the utmost safety.

The video shows the drag race in two attempts. In the first attempt, the Hyundai Verna accelerates quite ahead of the Innova and wins the race comfortably. A similar result can be seen in the second attempt too. It is not known if the drivers were changed for the second round but exchanging the drivers in a drag race provides a more uniform result.

The Hyundai Verna 1.6 diesel was one of the most powerful cars in the segment. It generated a maximum power of 126 Bhp and a peak torque of 260 Nm. It gets a manual transmission, which allows the driver to control the launches in a much better way. The Toyota Innova Crysta 2.8 diesel gets a massive power output of 172 Bhp and peak torque of 360 Nm. It is also an automatic transmission.

If you’re wondering how can a car with a more powerful engine lose a drag race, well, there are many reasons. First of all, the Toyota Innova Crysta is much heavier compared to the Verna, which is why it is slower and takes time to reach high speed. The Toyota Innova Crysta 2.8 automatic weighs close to 1,900 kg while the Verna weighs only around 1,200 kg, which is a massive difference of 700 kg. The Verna has a better power-to-weight ratio, which makes it much quicker and faster.

However, the top speed of both vehicles can be very different. Since testing the top speed requires a much longer stretch, it is not very safe to do. However, the Innova Crysta might overtake the Verna at higher speeds due to more power.
