Toyota is gearing up to release a smaller, more affordable version of its iconic SUV, the Land Cruiser, named “Mini Land Cruiser” for now. While there are no official details, leaked information and concept car designs give us an idea of what is about to come.

Early reports suggest the Mini Land Cruiser will borrow its design heavily from the 2021 Compact Cruiser EV concept. This concept car showcased boxy body language with a flat hood, circular headlights, and futuristic lines. These design elements resemble the classic FJ Cruiser, an off-roader sold by Toyota from 2006 to 2022.

Size-wise, the 5-door Mini Land Cruiser is expected to measure close to 4.35 meters in length and 1.35 meters in width, making it a compact and maneuverable vehicle. However, it will be a taller SUV, measuring around 1880mm in height, to provide sufficient ground clearance. These dimensions make the Mini Land Cruiser longer than the 5-door Suzuki Jimny but smaller than the Toyota Corolla Cross.

We can expect the SUV to be built on a ladder-on-frame chassis based on Toyota’s TNGA platform. A ladder-on-frame chassis prioritizes durability over a lighter unibody design, making it ideal for handling rough terrain. Additionally, permanent four-wheel drive with low-range gearing is a highly anticipated feature.

Engine options remain unconfirmed, but there are a few rumors though. A 2.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, borrowed from the Corolla Cross, produces 170 hp and 202 Nm of torque.

For those seeking more power and efficiency, a hybrid version of the same 2.0-liter engine is expected, producing 196 hp. Some reports suggest a 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine, similar to the one found in the Toyota Hilux pickup truck, producing about 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque.

Interior-wise, the SUV will borrow the layout from the Hilux Champ. Changes such as premium-quality materials, a larger entertainment system, and the addition of other advanced features are expected.

About the launch date, there are no confirmations or announcements from Toyota, but reports suggest a 2024-end launch. Pricing information is also unavailable, but it is expected to be positioned as an affordable off-roader, potentially starting at around $28,000 USD.

This price point makes it slightly more expensive than its primary competitor, the Suzuki Jimny. The Mini Land Cruiser will compete with other prominent players like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

With its affordable price point, off-road capabilities, and rugged design, the Mini Land Cruiser has the potential to be a significant player in the compact off-road SUV segment.

India is also a likely market for the mini-land Cruiser, which could be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Fortuner luxury SUV. If launched here, the mini Toyota Land Cruiser is expected to rival the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door and the Maruti Jimny SUVs.
