Toyota might bring their Rush compact SUV to India, taking cue from manufacturers like Renault and Ford who have the Duster and Ecosport compact SUVs for their Indian portfolio. Let’s find out whether the Toyota Rush has what it takes to have people ‘rushing’ to dealerships!
The Rush compact SUV will likely be launched in India only by 2014 and will compete with SUV’s like the Duster and EcoSport. That also indicates that the Rush will be priced between Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh as this is the price band in which its competition falls. The planning process has begun but things like the model line up, engine options, variants are yet to be finalized.
If Toyota slips in a compact SUV into their Indian portfolio it will likely be the Rush. An interesting fact about the Toyota Rush is that the Premier Rio is its distant cousin so to speak. The Premier Rio is the first generation model of the Daihatsu Terios and the Rush is the second generation model of the Terios. Also read: Hot SUVs that may soon drive into India!
The Toyota Rush sold abroad comes in both short wheelbase and long wheelbase variants with 5 seater and 7-seater configurations. The international model sports a 1.5-litre petrol engine but the India bound Rush will likely use the Corolla’s 1.4-litre D4-D diesel engine and the Etios’ 1.4 petrol engine.
In terms of features it will be equipped with ABS, EBD and Airbags on the top end variant. The Rush will be at par with its competition in terms of features. However, the Rush also has a 4WD variant abroad and it will be interesting to see if Toyota offers that in India. The chances of a four wheel drive Rush are slim, if Renault’s strategy is anything to go by as Renault hasn’t bought the 4×4 Duster to India.
