Build quality of cars is something that many car buyers are now taking into consideration while buying cars. Toyota’s Urban Cruiser compact SUV was one of the recent SUVs to be tested by Global NCAP and it cleared the crash test with 4 star rating. The compact SUV secured 4 star rating for adult and 3 star for child safety in the test. The video of the crash test has been released by the Global NCAP on YouTube. When it comes to protection of child occupants, Toyota Urban Cruiser scored 3 star rating. It has secured 36.68 points out of 49. Global NCAP mentioned that the ISOFIX mounts that are offered as standard feature helped Urban cruiser achieve this score. The testers used two child dummies at the rear. There was a dummy representing 3 year old and another dummy representing a 1.5 year old child. The CRS installed using the ISOFIX anchorages showed good protection of both child occupants. In 3 year old dummy, the car managed to prevent excessive forward movement of the head and also offered protection to chest. However it offered less protection to the neck. The car offered good protection to chest and head of the 1.5 year old dummy.
Toyota Urban Cruiser as we all-know is actually a rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza which is a popular SUV in the segment. Global NCAP had tested the pre-facelift version of Maruti Brezza and even that had scored a 4 star rating. In this sub-4 meter compact SUV segment, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300 are the SUVs that have cleared the test with a 5 star safety rating. Mahindra XUV300 has a better score when compared to Tata Nexon. Global NCAP had also done crash test on Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger. Both these SUVs also cleared the crash test with 4 star rating but, Urban Cruiser has a better score when compared to Brezza, Magnite and Kiger.
Maruti is currently working on a facelift for the Brezza and the same is expected to be launched in the market in coming months. The Brezza is expected to get an improved 1.5 litre petrol engine that would would be more fuel efficient and it would also get a 6-speed automatic transmission replacing the existing 4-speed unit and paddle shifters to. The same updates are expected to introduced in Urban Cruiser soon after the launch of Brezza.
