Toyota’s Ciaz (Belta) to replace Yaris in India: Timeline revealed

Recently, a grille of Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was leaked on which Toyota’s logo was being used. Then Toyota also filed a trademark for the ‘Belta’ nameplate suggesting that they will be launching their version of the Ciaz with the name Belta. According to ACI, Toyota can launch the Belta in the Indian market around August. It will be a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The Belta could prove to be a successful product for Toyota just like other Maruti Suzuki based vehicles has been.

Toyota has already stopped the production of Yaris. The sedan was launched in 2018 and it also got updated in 2019. However, it was never really a good seller in its segment. It had to compete against the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. All the other sedans are a very strong competitor in the segment. Honda City is the oldest and the most popular. Then there is the Verna, known for its powerful and versatile engine choices and loads of features. Lastly, there is the Ciaz which offers enough space for the occupants and value for money.

All the competitors are well established and it was very difficult for Yaris to make its spot because of various reasons. It lacked some features that other manufacturers offered, rivals offered more space and some people did not find it particularly attractive.

Because of all this, the Yaris sales never passed three-figure numbers a month. In Mar’21 Toyota sold 871 units whereas in February they sold 657 units. Another reason might be the upcoming mid-size SUV that Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are jointly developing. The trend of SUVs is stronger than sedans. Most people are preferring mid-size SUVs over sedans. The new SUV will be taking the place of Yaris on the production line. There will also be some other products that will be made in place of the Yaris.

Toyota Belta

The Belta will look very similar to the Ciaz. We know that there will be a different grille. There can also be a different set of front and rear bumpers so that it is easier to differentiate the Belta from Ciaz. The rest of the sedan would look just like the Ciaz as Toyota would not be making any major changes.

It will be powered by a 1.5-litre K-series naturally aspirated petrol engine that we have seen on the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6 and the S-Cross. The engine produces 105 PS of max power and a peak torque output of 138 Nm. The engine will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It will also come with mild-hybrid technology to boost fuel efficiency and it will also give Belta an idle start/stop feature. The pricing of the Belta is expected to be slightly more than the Ciaz just like we have seen with other rebadged Maruti products.

New mid-size SUV

The new mid-size SUV has been codenamed YFG internally. It will be replacing the ageing S-Cross in the Maruti Suzuki’s line-up. Toyota will also be selling its own version of the SUV. It is expected to get unveiled sometime in 2022.
