Toyota Urban SUV EV concept featured

Following the footsteps of its long-term strategic partner, the Japanese automotive giant Toyota has pulled back the covers off its new all-electric compact SUV, the Toyota Urban SUV concept. According to Toyota, this SUV is all set to make its global debut in production form next year. Interestingly, this SUV will be based on the Maruti Suzuki’s first full-electric compact SUV, eVX, and eagle-eyed viewers can note the striking resemblances between these two concept cars.

Is it a rebadged Maruti Suzuki eVX?

Very likely. Toyota and Suzuki are collaborating to build electric vehicles and the eVX was the first product from that collaboration. By the looks of it, the new electric SUV from Toyota seems like the second EV from this partnership. One of the first reasons as to why this newly unveiled Toyota Urban SUV concept is seen as a rebadged Maruti eVX is its dimensions. This new concept car measures 4,300mm in length, a figure which is identical to its Maruti counterpart. Additionally, it measures 1,820mm in width and 1,620mm in height. Whereas the eVX measures 1,800mm and 1,600mm respectively.

Another speculative point is that both SUVs have been shown with very similar-looking 20-inch aeroblades equipped alloy wheels. This adds weight to the theory of being a rebadged model. Similarly, the C-pillar, which is a subtle yet distinctive design element of any car, appears to be remarkably similar in both models. Observant viewers can also find similarities on the wheel arches of the Toyota Urban SUV and Maruti eVX.

Shared Architecture

The all-new Toyota Urban SUV EV concept will share its 27PL skateboard platform with the Maruti Suzuki eVX. This platform is being developed by both brands and will be locally produced in India. Most likely, the company will be producing these SUVs in Suzuki’s Gujarat facility for export as well as domestic markets.

Toyota Urban SUV concept styling

In terms of design language, the Urban SUV concept, according to the company, shares its aesthetics with new Toyota EVs, particularly the bZ compact SUV concept. It boasts sharp body lines and edgy surfaces. Along with it, the SUV gets C-shaped LED daytime running lamps, and the rugged SUV silhouette is reminiscent of Toyota’s contemporary electric vehicle lineup.

Powertrain options

At the moment, the company has not revealed the exact powertrain specifications of this SUV concept. However, it has stated that it will be offered with both front and all-wheel-drive powertrains. Most likely, we will see the same powertrain layout as the Maruti Suzuki eVX.

The upcoming Maruti Suzuki eVX initially, the concept vehicle shown at this year’s Indian Auto Expo, boasted a 60 kWh battery. It was stated that it would be providing an impressive range of 550 kilometers. However, new reports have stated that the production version might feature a slightly smaller 48 kWh battery, offering a real-world range of around 400 kilometers.

Most likely, the Toyota Urban Concept SUV will be launched after the launch of the Maruti Suzuki eVX, which is slated for early 2025. We can expect to see these new Toyota SUVs in dealerships around mid to late 2025.
