Brakes are one of the most important things while driving. They are the element that gives the driver the confidence to go fast because he knows that his brakes are powerful enough to bring him to a halt in case of an emergency. There can be many reasons for a brake failure. The brake line might just have got snapped, the master cylinder could have had a leak due to which the brakes lost all its pressure.

Fortunately, there are certain ways to stop the vehicle in such a scenario. You can slowly start downshifting gears so start going from fourth gear to third gear and then second gear. This will increase your engine revs and cause engine braking. Due to this, your vehicle will start shedding its speed and you would be able to come to a stop. Remember to use your hazard lights in such a scenario.

If you are going slowly then you can also again start downshifting till the first gear and once the speed is slow enough you can pull on the handbrake. Do not touch the accelerator pedal in any case as it will again give your car momentum. If you are near a divider or a curb, then you can gently rub off your tyres with the side wall and that will also slow down your vehicle. You can also use sand, slush or gravel on the side of the road which will also help in decreasing the speed.
