TVS Motors is grappling with poor demand for its flagship motorcycle – the Apache RR 310. In July 2018, TVS Motors shipped out only 351 units of the Apache RR 310, a big slump from the 983 units it shipped out during March 2018. The steep fall in demand means that TVS Motors has been selling only 416 units of the Apache RR 310 on an average each month.
This is nearly half of the targeted monthly sales for the TVS Apache RR310, at 833 units. TVS Motors hoped to sell 10,000 units of the flagship motorcycle in the first year of production. This target now seems very ambitious now considering the fact that TVS will have to sell nearly 1,433 monthly units of the Apache for the next 4 months to get there.
The TVS Apache RR310 is now priced at Rs. 2.23 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi, which is an 8 percent increase from the price at which the motorcycle was launched. Competition for the TVS Apache RR310 comes from the KTM RC390, which offers a much better value proposition, although it’s priced about Rs. 13,000 higher. The Apache RR310, which features technology from BMW Motorrad,
The motorcycle uses a 311cc, reverse inclined four stroke engine sourced from BMW Motorrad but built in India by TVS Motors. This single cylinder, liquid cooled motor makes 34 Bhp-28 Nm. Fuel injection, a four valve head and twin overhead camshafts are standard on this motor. A 6 speed manual gearbox accompanies this engine. The fully faired TVS Apache RR310 gets a full fairing, gorgeous styling, upside down front forks, a rear monoshock and a sporty riding position. Here is our video review of the bike:
In contrast, the KTM RC390, which is priced at Rs. 2.36 lakhs, offers a 373cc four stroke single cylinder engine with 43 Bhp-35 Nm on tap. A slipper clutch is also offered on the RC390, which gets a more extreme riding position suited more for the track than the road. In terms of outright performance, the KTM RC390 is capable of beating TVS Apache RR310 easily. Apart from looks and comfort, the TVS Apache RR310 falls short of the KTM RC390 in many aspects and this could be a reason why the sales are falling.
