UM will launch a brand new, entry-level cruiser for the Indian market. The bike will be based on the Renegade range and will sit under the Renegade Sport in terms of price and positioning. However, the motorcycle will have a smaller, 230cc four stroke engine that is expected to put out about 20 Bhp of peak power. A 5 speed manual gearbox will be standard. It will be priced under Rs. 1.5 lakhs, making it a direct competitor of the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 UCE. The cruiser motorcycle will also feature a few other pared down bits to drive down costs and make it more affordable.
Currently, UM sells four cruisers in the Indian market under the Renegade brand. The lowest priced bike is called the Sport, and sells for Rs. 1.59 lakhs, while the most expensive one is called the Classic, and is priced at Rs. 1.95 lakhs. Two other variants – the Commando and Mojave – are mid-priced variants, both priced at Rs. 1.76 lakhs. All four motorcycles use a 280cc, four stroke engine with liquid cooling. The engine produces 25 Bhp of peak power and 23 Nm of peak torque. A 5 speed manual gearbox is standard, and so is fuel injection.
The entry-level UM cruiser bike will be revealed at the Auto Expo 2018, and is expected to go on sale soon after. Bookings are also expected to open soon after the launch and price announcement. UM is also expected to showcase a new electric cruiser – India’s first such motorcycle – at the Auto Expo. However, the electric cruiser may take a couple of years to entry production, and for the time being is more of a concept that will show the direction UM is taking in terms of future product development. The electric cruiser will be one among many electric two wheelers to be displayed at the Auto Expo by multiple brands.
