Upcoming Hyundai Exter revealed completely before official launch

Days after fully camouflaged spy shots, rendered images and sketch shots of the upcoming Exter, here are the first pictures that reveal the car completely. The photos are from South Korea, where the Hyundai headquarters are located. The upcoming Exter will take on the cars like Tata Punch and Maruti Suzuki Fronx in the Indian market.

The picture of the Exter reveals the front end completely and shows the new-age Hyundai design that we recently saw in the all-new Verna. The front-end gets a sleek design with split headlamp set-up. The upper part gets the unique LED DRL set-up that also works as turn indicators. The lower part of the car gets a main headlamp cluster with projector lamps.

The side of the new Hyundai Exter gets squared-off wheel arches. There is a thick cladding on the wheel arches as well. The A and B pillars of the Exter are blacked-out while the C-Pillar is quite straight and gets a dual-tone finish. We can also see the roof rails but we are not sure if these are functional.

Just like all Hyundai cars, the new Exter also gets some new-age alloy wheels. The India-spec variant of the car will get different alloys though. The rear of the car’s new Exter gets blacked out bumper and it seems like dual exhaust pipes.

The tail lamps get the same LED structures as the DRLs of the headlamps and there is a blacked-out stripe that connects both the lamps. The new Exter will be a five-seater that will bolster Hyundai India’s position in the SUV market.

Likely to get drive modes

The new Hyundai Exter is poised to be the most capable vehicle in its segment. With advanced terrain modes and traction-based features, this compact SUV will be able to tackle a variety of terrains with ease, as showcased in teasers released by Hyundai.

Built on the K1 small car platform, which also underpins other popular Hyundai models like the Grand i10 Nios and Aura, the Exter will feature a unique design language. While similar in size to the Korea-exclusive Hyundai Casper, the Exter will sport a boxy, upright stance reminiscent of the Venue, but with a distinct design all its own. It’s possible that Hyundai’s “sensuous sportiness” design philosophy may be incorporated into the Exter’s design.

The Exter is expected to be equipped with a 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which has the potential to generate 83 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque. The vehicle will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a 5-speed AMT may be offered as an option. The top-end trims of the Exter may also come with the option of a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, which is already available in the Venue.

The Exter will face competition from other sub-compact SUVs like the Tata Punch and Citroen C3, as well as the lower-spec naturally-aspirated versions of other compact SUVs such as the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
