Mahindra announced last year that they would be launching the 5-door version of the Thar in 2024. Since then, several spy pictures and videos of the Mahindra Thar 5-door have surfaced on the internet. Initially, it was a test mule, but lately, the production-ready version of this SUV has been spotted. It is one of the most anticipated SUVs from Mahindra for the upcoming year. A new video has now emerged online, featuring a Mahindra Thar alongside a Jeep Wrangler SUV. Surprisingly, the Mahindra 5-door appears larger than the Jeep.
The video was shared by Harsh Vlogs on their YouTube channel and was recorded somewhere in Ladakh. Presumably, Mahindra was conducting tests on the SUV in high-altitude areas when this video was filmed. In the video, Mahindra is seen testing another SUV alongside the Thar 5-door, but the video doesn’t offer many details about the test vehicle in front. The primary focus remains on the Mahindra Thar 5-door, especially due to the vehicle it was alongside.
In the footage, a Ladakh-registered Jeep Wrangler Rubicon follows the Mahindra Thar 5-door on the same route. The Wrangler owner might have been interested in learning more about the Thar or simply wanted a closer look at the vehicle. Whatever the reason, it provided a good opportunity to compare the sizes of both cars. Clearly visible in the video, the Mahindra Thar appears larger than the Jeep Wrangler.
Both SUVs traversed the same road, driving side by side. The Thar 5-door seems slightly taller than the Mahindra Thar. In terms of dimensions, it appears that the Jeep Wrangler is slightly wider and possibly a bit longer than the Thar. However, when it comes to height, the Thar 5-door is definitely taller. The exact details regarding the dimension of Mahindra Thar 5-door is currently not available. The video also highlights design differences between the two SUVs.
The Mahindra Thar 5-door features a more boxy design on the roof, while the Jeep Wrangler narrows as it ascends. The fenders on both SUVs add muscularity to the vehicles, and the design of the taillamps differs between the two. Another notable distinction lies in the roofs: while the Jeep Wrangler comes with a removable roof, it seems unlikely for the Thar 5-door to have this feature. The main reason could be its provision for a sunroof.
The mechanism to control the roof is located under it, potentially making a removable roof impractical. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel indicates that Mahindra will equip the SUV with AT tires from the CEAT brand. The tire size might be the same 18 inches as that of the 3-door version. Changes to the cabin design of the Mahindra Thar 5-door are expected.
The Mahindra Thar 5-door is anticipated to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The SUV is expected to offer both 2WD and 4×4 versions. The engine in this version is likely to have a different state of tune compared to the 3-door version. Mahindra is expected to launch the SUV in the Indian market next year.
