Snapshot: CarToq profiles the upcoming sedans for the Indian car market in 2014. The cars listed below represent the new sedan launches and facelifts in the sub-10 lakh rupee category. Many of the upcoming sedans will be showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo.
The sedan segment will see the maximum number of launches in 2014, outstripping the hatchback, SUV and MPV segment by a good margin. While a bunch of sedans will be showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, launches will happen throughout the year.
Maruti Suzuki YL1 Sedan
A hotly awaited launch, the YL1 codenamed sedan will be Maruti Suzuki’s attempt to turn around its fortunes in the C-Segment sedan class as the SX4 sedan is a slow seller by Maruti standards. The YL1 will be based on a modified Ertiga platform, with whom it will share its engine, transmission and other aggregates.
A 1.4 liter K-Series petrol engine, a 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine, 5 speed manual gearboxes and a 4 speed automatic transmission for the petrol variants will be on offer with the YL1. Maruti Suzuki Dzire Facelift
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire will get a mid career facelift in the next couple of months. With an Auto Expo 2014 unveil likely, the Dzire facelift will feature minor changes in terms of exterior styling while gaining a feature or two on the inside. The 1.2 liter K-Series petrol and the 1.3 liter fiat Multijet turbo diesel engines will be retained and so will the 5 speed manual gearboxes for both the motors. Hyundai Grand i10 Compact Sedan
Over the past few days, spyshots of the Hyundai Grand i10 test mules have been doing the rounds on the interweb. The compact sedan version of the Grand i1o is likely to be unveiled just ahead of the 2014 Indian Auto Expo with a launch to follow shortly. Engines and gearboxes of the compact sedan may be be carried over from the hatchback sibling. The Grand i10 based compact sedan will also share the platform, wheelbase and interiors with the hatchback variants. Expect pricing of the Grand i10 compact sedan to rival that of the Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze.
Tata Manza Facelift
Tata Motors is working on facelifts for the Vista and the Manza. While test mules of the Vista revamp (Falcon 4) are a regular sight on Indian roads, the facelifted Manza is yet to hit the test circuit. Even so, expect many of the improvements made on the 2014 Vista/Falcon 4 to make it onto the Manza facelift since both cars share platforms. The facelift is means to add new features and refresh looks of the Manza facelift. In line with this, the car will retain engine and transmission options, and perhaps the pricing too.
Tata Falcon 5 (Manza based) compact sedan
Tata is developing a new compact sedan that will be based on the revamped Vista/Manza. The compact sedan, dubbed the Falcon 5 project, is said to be inspired by the Tata Manza Hybrid that was first showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. Apart from sharper styling, Tata Motors’ chief designer has claimed that the Falcon 5 will be more fun to drive and will reek of quality in terms of interior fitments. Click here to know more.
Ford Fiesta Facelift
Ford India will seek to boost sales of the new Fiesta sedan by facelifting the car with the new, Aston Martin inspired design language. The Fiesta, with an Aston Martinesque grille will definitely turn more heads. On the inside, the facelift will be more minor with a refreshed center console being the most significant change. While the 1.5 liter TDCI turbo diesel engine will motor on unchanged, Ford could launch the 1 liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine while retaining the 1.5 liter Ti-VCT naturally aspirated motor.
2014 Honda City
Much has been said and written about the 2014 Honda City, a car that will be launched on the 9th of January 2014. If Honda prices the 2014 City right, the car could become a best seller in the C-Segment space, retaining its erstwhile position after a 2 year+ hiatus. Fiat Linea Facelift
Fiat’s facelifted Linea has made its international debut and the car is due to be launched here in early 2014. The Linea facelift gets refreshed interiors and exteriors while the rumor mill suggests that a 1.6 liter Multijet turbo diesel motor could finally make an appearance in the facelifted car. Also, the 1.4 liter T-Jet turbo petrol engine could be the standard motor on the petrol variants. In terms of pricing, the Linea Facelift will be positioned above the Linea Classic cut-price variant.
Hindustan Ambassador Compact Sedan
The Ambassador Compact Sedan will be the second prong of Hindustan Motors’ turn around plans, which began with the BS4 variant of the full sized Ambassador sedan. The compact sedan variant is a shortened version of the Ambassador, with a stubby boot to make for a sub-4 meter length. The 1.5 liter OHV turbo diesel engine (49 Bhp-112.5 Nm) will power the smaller Amby sedan. A price close to the 4 lakh rupee mark will make the Ambassador compact sedan a more spacious alternate to many B-segment hatchbacks. But will the Indian car buyer bite the bait? Time will tell.
