Come 2022, and the Indian car market and demand for SUVs are only going to get hotter with the arrival of some SUV offerings in the sub-four metre compact SUV segment. Following are the top five sub-four metre compact SUVs that are going to intensify the already tough competition in the segment:
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Vitara Brezza is still selling like hot cakes in the Indian car market. However, the arrival of newer and more feature-rich rivals has made the Vitara Brezza look like a dated proposition. To bring in some much-needed novelty, Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the second-generation version of the SUV. The new version will drop the ‘Vitara’ suffix and be named only ‘Brezza’. The new Maruti Suzuki Brezza will come with a completely revamped exterior design, with sleeker-looking LED headlamps and tail lamps. There will be some new features on offer too, with the Brezza getting an electric sunroof – a first for Maruti Suzuki. The powertrain, however, is expected to be the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with mild-hybrid functionality as standard.

Citroen C3
The Citroen C3 has already been previewed by the French carmaker and will be the first major volume-oriented product, considering that the C5 Aircross has a limited and niche buying audience. The new C3 is being claimed as a raised hatchback, but it will get the dimensions and stance of a proper sub-compact SUV. The biggest highlight of the Citroen C3 is its funky-looking design, which is going to bring some freshness to the segment. Expect a range of modern features like a touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. While there aren’t many details available regarding its mechanicals, the Citroen C3 is expected to get a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine for the Indian market.
Hyundai Venue facelift
The Hyundai Venue has been on sale for three years now, and while the sub-compact SUV has been a consistent seller for Hyundai, it too needs a fresh breeze of update. Hyundai has always been quick in bringing in updates for its vehicles, and it will continue the streak by launching the facelifted Venue. A test mule of the Hyundai Venue has already been spied. It indicates that the Venue will retain its squared-off stance, but will get significant tweaks to the front profile and tail lamps, the latter of which will become sleeker in appearance. The cabin is also expected to get a couple of new features. However, the extensive choices of petrol and diesel powertrains with multiple gearbox options will be retained in the new model.
Tata Punch turbo-petrol, CNG and diesel
The Tata Punch has become another mega-seller for Tata Motors, with factors like unique micro-SUV design and stance and a 5-star rating in Global NCAP crash tests backing its popularity. However, one aspect which is the Achilles heel for the Punch is its not-so-energetic 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. To bring in some enthusiasm to the Punch, Tata Motors will be bringing in a turbo-petrol variant for it. The engine is expected the same 1.2-litre 110 PS turbo-petrol engine from the Altroz i-Turbo. In addition, Tata Motors might also pull off a surprise by launching the diesel-powered variants of the Tata Punch, which are also speculated to be launched. Tata will also bring the CNG-powered Punch.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno-based crossover
In a recent dealer meet, Maruti Suzuki, revealed that it will be bringing in another sub-compact SUV offering in the sub-four metre space. This new SUV will have a more crossover-like rounded design and will be based on the Heartect platform of Baleno. The overall design language and powertrain options will be inspired by the Baleno. It will make it a completely different product in comparison to the other sub-four metre SUV from Maruti Suzuki, the Brezza. This new crossover will get either the 1.2-litre petrol from the Baleno or the 1.5-litre petrol from the Brezza.
