Premium Hatchbacks are perfect for the stop-go city traffic, deliver good fuel efficiency, and handle and ride well on most but the really bad roads. They currently range between Rs 5,50,000 – Rs 10,00,000 on the new car market. The used version is an ideal buy for those wanting a genuine 5-seater that is easy on the pocket. Its hard to ignore Swift and Baleno, the two bestsellers from Maruti. However, the Hyundai i20, VW Polo and Honda Jazz offer a more ‘premium’ experience with the latter two being fun to drive as well.
Used Premium Hatchbacks average around Rs 3,50,000 in Pune with lower end tending to be around Rs 3,10,500 and upper end tending to be around Rs 3,80,000. The higher end of the range will get you SWIFT which is 8 years old while if you veer towards the minimum, then you will have to contend with JAZZ which is 7 years old. So, what should you go for? Which are the best deals available on the market?
Recommendation #1: Hyundai I20 Sportz 1.4 CRDi 6 Speed BS IV
Year: 2014 / Kms Driven: 52,333 / List Price: Rs 300,000 / Ex Showroom Price: Rs 709,000
This entry, which comes at a discount of 58% to its original price is 5 years old and has done just 52,333 Kms. This diesel-powered, I20 is currently with its third owner. Hyundais are well-built but still lose value faster than, say Honda, and that’s why you have a good deal here. While you may have to shell for minor wear and tear plus replace tyres, there shouldn’t be any unpleasant surprises with an i20 that has clocked less than 60,000 km. But do get it checked nonetheless. Overall, i20 is a very reliable car with the exception of early specimens suffering from steering judder.
Recommendation #2: Hyundai I20 Asta 1.4 AT 2012
Year: 2012 / Kms Driven: 75,000 / List Price: Rs 371,250 / Ex Showroom Price: Rs 769,348
This entry, which comes at a discount of 52% to its original price is 7 years old and has done 75,000 Kms. Currently with its second owner, this white coloured I20 comes with a petrol powerplant. The added bonus is that its an automatic–which are harder to find on the used car market. Since the sample you are looking at is more than 60,000 km, have it checked thoroughly. One caveat: Hyundai’s aren’t the best when it comes to fuel efficiency so it’s a good deal but only if your usage isn’t too high.
Recommendation #3: Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi
Year: 2012 / Kms Driven: 86,340 / List Price: Rs 250,000 / Ex Showroom Price: Rs 494,792
This entry, which comes at a discount of 49% to its original price is 7 years old and has done 86,340 Kms. This petrol + cng-powered, SWIFT is currently with its first owner. The rear seat space is tight and the boot is tiny on Swift of this gen but otherwise its a fine car. Since the car has clocked nearly 90,000 km, we recommend that you have the car inspected by a competent mechanic with a particular focus on suspension. The Maruti Swift has largely been a trouble free car, even in the long run. That said, a few models made in Oct’13 had problems with the steering column Cars with high odo reading must be checked for proper working of the suspension.
