The first Tesla electric car landed into India a week ago. It was a Model X imported by Prashant Ruia, the CEO of the Essar group – a conglomerate worth a few billion dollars. The Model X SUV has been seen on Mumbai roads, and here is a video of the vehicle in action.
The Model X is the only SUV that Tesla sells globally. It is a seven seater that has three rows of seating. In the US, it sells for around 130,000 US dollars. When privately imported into India, it costs about 2 crores. Like all cars from Tesla, it is a high performance machine that can easily shame a lot of sportscars. Is features two electric motors that drive each of the two axles, one at the front and the other at the rear.
The electric motor at front makes 259 PS and the one at the rear puts out 503 PS. Together, the total torque output of the Model X is a massive 967 Nm. This gives the SUV really quick acceleration. It can go from rest to 100 Kph in just 4.8 seconds. Top speed is 250 Kph. Tesla also sells a faster version of the Model X called the P90D.
This version accelerates even more faster, with a 0-100 Kph acceleration timing of just 3.8 seconds.
The company offers a very interesting mode on this car called ‘Ludicrous’. When this mode is activated, the acceleration becomes rocket-like, with the Model X taking just 3.2 seconds to hit 100 Kph. The Model X features a semi-autonomous driving system that’s called Auto Pilot. Currently, it is the closest thing to driverless cars. Tesla has plans of selling its cheapest car – the Model 3 – in the Indian market. However, the company has not yet announced a specific launch date for this car in India. Bookings have already been taken from many Indians.
