Stephen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, has revealed that the next big launch from the German car brand could be the Ameo TSI. Volkswagen India is currently planning this car as one of its ‘action models’ for the Indian market.
The Ameo TSI is likely to be launched later this year, and will be based on the Polo GT TSI. The Ameo TSI is expected to borrow the engine and automatic gearbox from the Polo GT TSI. Expect the Ameo TSI to use the 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine with 104 Bhp-175 Nm, and a 7 speed twin clutch DSG automatic gearbox.
This is the same engine and gearbox combination offered by the Polo GT TSI and Vento TSI. Volkswagen already offers the 7 speed DSG twin clutch automatic gearbox on the Ameo Diesel. Once the new turbocharged petrol engine-gearbox version is introduced on the Ameo, the car will become India’s most powerful one in the compact sedan segment. The car is likely to be positioned as a sportier alternative to other compact sedans sold in India. The Ameo – a car developed specifically for the Indian market – is the first sub-4 meter sedan from Volkswagen.
Also, more compact sedans in India are now getting both petrol and diesel automatic options. This is a reason why Volkswagen is thinking of equipping the Ameo with a petrol-DSG combination. The new Dzire already offers petrol and diesel AMT options, and the upcoming Amaze will also offer petrol and diesel CVT options.
The Ameo is essentially a compact sedan version of the Polo hatchback. Strengths of the Ameo include solid build quality, good safety levels with airbags and ABS standard across variants, a powerful turbo diesel engine and a diesel-automatic option, something that most other compact sedans miss in their line-ups. The addition of the petrol-automatic version will round off the Ameo range nicely.
