That Volkswagen will go slow on all-new products for India until 2016 is well known. At its Indian outpost, the German automaker will make do with variants and facelifts of its existing range of cars until 2016. The talk of a sub-4 meter compact sedan has been on the web for a while now and so has been that of a sub-4 meter compact SUV.
The SUV that is likely to be tailor made for emerging markets is said to feature a mid-2016 launch time frame in India. Volkswagen India showcased the Taigun compact SUV at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and it remains to be seen if this SUV is what the company is considering for its foray into the sub-4 meter compact SUV space.
The Volkswagen Taigun shares its A0 platform with the Up! hatchback that is sold in the developed markets of the world. The A0 platform is likely to be stretched, making for a longer wheelbase to suit buying sensibilities in the developing world.
In that light, if the Taigun is tailored for India, the compact SUV is likely to get longer than its concept version, to measure just under 4 meters rather than retain its current length of 3,858 mm. Both petrol and diesel engines are likely to be offered on the compact SUV that Volkswagen has lined up for India.
Reportedly, the Indian subsidiary of the German automaker is said to be close to finalizing the sub-4 meter project, code-named VW 251\2. Once the final approval arrives from Wolfsburg, Volkswagen India will begin reaching out to vendors, asking for quotes for components required for the new compact SUV project.
Taigun or no Taigun, Volkswagen India desperately needs a solid mass market product given its lackluster sales performance here. A sub-4 meter compact sedan based on the Vento or Up! platform is one such product that Volkswagen is said to be considering. Click here to read more.
