The average Indian hatchback buyer has always shown a preference for fuel efficiency but more and more buyers are bending towards performance. Now Volkswagen is all set to launch the Polo 1.6 diesel hatchback which will provide buyers the best of both worlds.
The Volkswagen Polo 1.6 will be launched in India in 2013 and this hot hatch that offers an ideal blend of performance and frugality. The Polo 1.6 will have the same 1.6 litre motor that powers the Volkswagen Vento 1.6 sedan. The good thing here is that the Polo is almost 90 kgs lighter than the Vento sedan giving it a better power to weight ratio.
The changes on the Polo 1.6 diesel won’t just be skin deep though and Volkswagen has made it more attractive. The Polo 1.6 will come with a sporty body kit, low profile tyres and minor exterior changes that will set it apart from the regular Polo.
The 1,598 cc diesel motor of the Vento 1.6 is mated to a 5-speed gearbox and makes 104 bhp of power at 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1500-2500 rpm. The same motor will make more power and torque on the Polo 1.6.
There will likely be minor changes on the inside as well and since there will be a substantial difference in production costs; the Polo 1.6 will also be more expensive than the Regular Polo. Also read: New Hyundai i-Gen i20 vs. Volkswagen Polo: Diesel comparison
