Set to be unveiled on February 2 – a day before the 2016 Auto Expo opens its gates for media – the upcoming compact sedan from Volkswagen will be called Ameo. It’s based on Polo’s platform and as seen in earlier spy shots, it shares a lot with the Polo and the Vento, but comes with a redesigned rear end.
It was in November last year that VW announced its plans to make a compact sedan. The company also allocated a Rs 720-crore budget and said that the car would be made at the company’s manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra.
The engine range is likely to remain the same as that on the Polo – a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel. And while a 1.2-litre TSI engine with a 7-speed DSG transmission (from the Polo GT TSI) might sound nice, but it remains to be seen whether VW brings that out.
Ameo is derived from the Latin word ‘Amo’ which means ‘I love’. Given the market’s liking for most things sub-four-metre, the love is likely to be reciprocated.
