Toyota is all set to claim a larger chunk of the entry level sedan segment and the small car segment with diesel variants of the Etios and the Liva. Both these cars will see a formal launch on September 9.
So what can you expect from these cars? Will they deliver in terms of fuel efficiency? Performance? Any other changes in the diesel variants?
There will be no external changes on either of the two cars apart from the badging that will signify that they sport diesel motors under the hood.
What to expect from the Toyota Liva diesel
The petrol Liva received a lukewarm response from buyers but the Liva diesel will likely fit the bill if you’re looking for a small car which delivers in terms of space, performance and mileage.

Engine: The Liva diesel will be powered by a 1.4 litre diesel engine with fixed geometry turbo. This engine also does duty in the Toyota Corolla but comes with a variable geometry turbo there. This engine will belt out roughly 67 bhp of power and 168 Nm of torque. The Liva diesel will hence likely be a peppy car to drive.
Mileage: The ARAI certified mileage figure for the Liva is 23.6kmpl, so we can expect real world figures of around 19-20 kmpl.
Price: The Liva diesel is expected be in the Rs. 5 – 6.5 lakh price bracket. The price is reasonable although the high end variants may not seem too practical as they do not offer too much in terms of creature comforts.
What to expect from the Toyota Etios diesel
The Etios sedan didn’t exactly become a rage in its petrol avatar, but it did have a very good proposition as an entry level sedan. Now the same car becomes much more interesting with a diesel engine under its hood, because we Indians love diesel engines.

Engine: The Etios diesel will be powered by the same 1.4 litre diesel engine that will be the heart of the Liva small car. This engine too is expected to churn out the same 67 bhp of power and 168 Nm of torque. Now the petrol variants of the Etios sedan, J and G weigh 900 kg and 915 kg respectively while the V and VX variants weigh 930 kg.
The same variants of the Liva small car weigh 890 kg, 900 kg and 920 kg respectively, so it is quite possible that both the cars will have the same power output and mileage figures.
Mileage: The ARAI certified mileage figure for the Etios too is 23.6kmpl, so we can expect real world figures of around 18-19 kmpl.
Price: The Etios diesel is expected to be priced in the Rs. 6.3 – 7.8 lakh range and prices will officially be announced tomorrow.
In the meantime, some Toyota dealers have already started accepting bookings for the upcoming Etios and Liva diesel versions at a booking amount of Rs. 50,000.
