You have been opening your car door the wrong way; Here’s how to do it the RIGHT way

Something as simple as opening a car door can mean the difference between life and death. Not convinced? Well, you must watch this video below.

This gruesome incident happened in Punjab. A truck ran over a couple of bikers who lost their balance after being hit by a car door. The man opening the door of the car didn’t notice the bikers coming from behind. Both bikers were instantly killed when the truck ran over them.

Could this have been prevented?

Of course, by something called the ‘Dutch Reach’. This refers to a method in which you can open the door of a car safely and ensure that you don’t accidentally hit a biker or a cyclist while opening the door of your car.

How does it work?

It’s very simple. While opening the door of a car, you should always reach for the door handle with the farthest hand. For example, if you’re sitting on the driver’s seat and want to get out, use your left hand to pull the door handle instead of the right.

Using this technique will ensure that head turns towards the door, with your eyes glancing for moving obstacles coming from behind. This way, you’ll be able to spot if some other vehicle or pedestrian is approaching from the rear. Following this method and making this a habit can prevent a lot of accidents.

So, what are you waiting for? Start using the Dutch Reach method of opening your car’s door right away. Also, ensure that you teach your kids and others about this method so that more and more people practice this, saving cyclists and bikers from getting hit by car doors.
