Toyota is one of the most popular automobile manufacturers in the world. Moreover, their Land Cruiser SUVs are even more popular among enthusiasts for their rugged build quality, off-road capabilities, low cost of maintenance and reliability. Here, we have an FJ40 model of Land Cruiser SUV that is currently on sale in the used market. It is quite a rare SUV, especially in India. There are still quite a few people who are trying to collect an FJ 40.
It is a 1977 model so it is quite old but you would not have to find very special mechanics for it. Because the stock powertrain of this FJ40 has been replaced with Mahindra Scorpio. So, the engine, gearbox and transfer case is from the Mahindra Scorpio. So, a good mechanic that can work on Scorpio’s engine should also be able to work on this FJ40.
Extensive upgrades to the suspension

The owner has made major upgrades to the suspension of the rare SUV. First of all, there is a 4-inch lift kit installed which increases the ground clearance of the SUV significantly. The rear shock absorbers are sourced from Fox. It is a well-known name in the automobile industry that specifically specialize in shock absorbers that are used for off-roading. People who off-road a lot in their SUVs or pick-up trucks usually end-up buying fox shock absorbers. Popular trucks like Ford F-150, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Bronco and there are other vehicles also.
The rear suspension has been upgraded from leaf springs to coil springs. Coil Springs offer more suspension travel than leaf springs, they are more comfortable as they offer better ride quality and don’t really require any major maintenance. The owner says that the front shock absorbers are adjustable, but he does not mention the manufacturer of these shocks.
Other details
The odometer of the SUV is not functioning so we do not really know how many kilometres the FJ40 has covered. The owner has also upgraded the tyres to the Yokomaha ones. They are Geolander All-terrain tyres that have a 275-section. Pictures of the interior have not been shared by the seller. The SUV is located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh and the seller is asking Rs. 18 lakhs for it which seems a bit high for an FJ40 that is fitted with a Mahindra Scorpio’s engine. Condition
The condition of this FJ40 looks quite good. It is finished in bright sunny yellow colour with a front white grille. It has a cloth roof and curtains. There is a light bar installed in the front that will increase visibility while off-roading. There are also additional lights placed for the same purpose. At the rear, there is a jerry can holder in which we can see a black jerry can. There is “Toyota” and “4 Wheel Drive” badging on the tailgate also. Overall, the SUV does look pretty well maintained.
